Luís Castro Extends stay at Dunkerque, Aiming for Ligue 1 Promotion
Portuguese manager Luís Castro has secured his future at Dunkerque, signing a contract extension that will keep him at the helm until 2027. This declaration comes amidst a stellar season for the club, currently sitting in third place in Ligue 2 with 31 points after 16 matches, just two points behind league leaders Lorient.
Castro, who previously managed benfica B, joined Dunkerque in September 2023. His immediate impact was evident as he successfully steered the team away from relegation to the third tier in the 2023/24 season, culminating in a 16th-place finish. Now, the 44-year-old tactician has set his sights on a more ambitious goal: promotion to Ligue 1.
Expressing his delight with the contract renewal,Castro emphasized the strong bond he has forged with the club, its staff, and the passionate supporters. “I feel very much at home in Dunkerque,” he stated on the club’s official website. “I am convinced that the club has a shining future. While we aim to replicate the success of 2024, our ambition is to achieve even greater things in 2025.”
Dunkerque’s first challenge of the new year will be a trip to face seventh-placed guingamp (25 points) on Saturday.
Selçuk Demir, co-president of Dunkerque, echoed Castro’s optimism, highlighting the manager’s growing reputation and the club’s confidence in his leadership. “We firmly believe in Luís Castro’s potential and his vision for the club,” Demir affirmed. ”He is a highly regarded and sought-after coach.”

Jean-François, with your experience in the French leagues, we wanted to get your take on the exciting news coming out of dunkerque. luís Castro just signed a contract extension until 2027, and the team is looking incredibly strong in their push for Ligue 1 promotion.
Moderator: Jean-François, what’s your initial reaction to this news? Do you think Castro is the right man to led Dunkerque to the top flight?
Jean-François Rivière: It’s fantastic news for dunkerque fans. Luís Castro has clearly made a big impact since arriving in September. Turning the team around from a relegation fight last season to a potential promotion push this year is a testament to his managerial skills. He seems to have gained the trust and respect of the players, which is crucial to any team’s success.
Moderator: Absolutely. They’re sitting pretty in third place, just two points behind Lorient. Do you believe they have what it takes to go all the way and secure automatic promotion?
Jean-François Rivière: It’s certainly possible. They have shown amazing consistency, and Castro has instilled a winning mentality in the squad. Ligue 2 is a very competitive league, though. Teams like Lorient, who are leading the pack, and Guingamp, who they face next, will be tough opponents. Dunkerque will need to maintain this level of performance throughout the season.
Moderator: Dunkerque’s first match of the new year is a crucial away fixture against Guingamp. What are your thoughts on this match-up? Do you see it as a potential stumbling block in their promotion aspirations?
Jean-François Rivière: Guingamp pose a serious threat. They are a solid team with a lot of experience at this level. However, remember, Dunkerque defied expectations last season by escaping relegation. They have a knack for exceeding expectations. I think it will be a tightly contested match, but if Dunkerque plays to their strengths and Castro can get his tactics right, they have a good chance of coming away with a positive result.
Moderator: speaking of tactics, what do you think Castro brings to the table that has been so impactful for Dunkerque?
Jean-François Rivière: Castro seems to favour an attacking style of play, which has been very successful for him so far. he has also shown great trust in his young players, giving them the opportunity to develop and shine.I think his ability to blend experience with youthful enthusiasm is key to Dunkerque’s success.
Moderator: Dunkerque’s president, selçuk Demir, has spoken highly of Castro’s vision for the club. How important do you think it is for a manager to have a clear vision for the team’s future, especially in a club striving for promotion?
Jean-François Rivière: Essential. A strong vision provides direction and focus for everyone involved, from the players to the coaching staff and the fans. it creates a shared sense of purpose and belief, which can be a powerful motivator. If Castro can continue to build upon the trust and unity he has fostered this season, I have no doubt Dunkerque will be a force to be reckoned with in Ligue 1.
Moderator: Well said. We’ll be following Dunkerque’s journey closely. Thanks so much for sharing your insights, Jean-François.
Jean-François Rivière: My pleasure. I wish them all the best in their pursuit of promotion.
