Indian Badminton Duo Falls Short at Malaysian Open
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, India’s top-ranked men’s doubles badminton team, saw their campaign at the Malaysian Open come to an end in the semifinals. The seventh-seeded pair were outplayed by South Korea’s Kim won-ho and Seo Seung-Jae, losing in straight games 10-21, 15-21. The match, which lasted a mere 40 minutes, marked the conclusion of Indian participation in the tournament.
Reflecting on the match, Satwik acknowledged the strong performance of their opponents. ”They played exceptionally well,” he stated, as reported by Olympics.com. “We had observed their impressive form earlier in the tournament and were prepared. Though, they executed their game plan flawlessly today, denying us easy points and forcing us to fight for every point.”
despite adhering to their own strategy, satwik and Chirag ultimately fell short. “we followed our game plan, but credit must be given to our opponents,” Satwik added. “While we are disappointed with the outcome,we view this tournament as a positive experience overall.”
The Indian duo, currently ranked ninth in the world, struggled from the outset, trailing 6-11 in the first game before succumbing in just 19 minutes.
A glimmer of hope emerged in the second game as Satwik and Chirag took an 11-8 lead. Though, they were unable to sustain this momentum, allowing their opponents to regain control and secure the victory.
Chirag attributed their loss partly to a few unforced errors. “We aimed for a calmer approach in the second game, but credit to our opponents,” he explained.”Perhaps we gave away a few easy points.”
Kim Won-ho, a mixed doubles silver medalist at the Paris 2024 Olympics, and Seo Seung-jae, the reigning men’s and mixed doubles world champion, proved to be formidable adversaries.
Last year’s Malaysian Open saw Satwik and Chirag finish as runners-up, highlighting their consistent performance at this tournament.
Earlier in the competition, fellow Indian Olympians Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy were eliminated, failing to make a notable impact.Badminton enthusiasts can look forward to seeing these stars back in action at the India Open, commencing in Delhi on Tuesday.
