As a former rider who switched teams, can you give us your viewpoint on the challenges Marc will face adapting to a new machine?
Mick Doohan: Absolutely. Every bike has its personality, its quirks.Marquez has spent his career primarily on Hondas, and while he’s undeniably talented, adapting to the Ducati’s unique characteristics will take time. The riding style, brake points, throttle response – everything will feel different.
It’s not just about the physical adjustments either. He also needs to gel with the team, understand their working methods, and build that crucial trust. Ducati is known for its strong team spirit, but integrating yourself takes time.
This article mentions Marquez is highly motivated to ride the “best bike possible,” even stating he “doesn’t care about anything else.” Do you see this drive as a positive or a potential pressure point?
Mick Doohan: I admire that fire, that hunger to compete at the highest level. It’s what separates the good from the great. However, it’s a double-edged sword. That intensity can also lead to frustration if things don’t click immediately.
he’s competing with a highly talented teammate in Pecco Bagnaia, the reigning champ. That internal competition could be a catalyst for pushing both riders forward but could also become a source of pressure if comparisons become to constant.
Marquez’s move to Ducati comes after a challenging period with Honda. He mentioned wanting to extend his career. Do you think Ducati provides the platform for him to achieve that goal and possibly even snag a ninth title?
Mick Doohan: Ducati undeniably has a strong package. They’ve been consistently competitive, and Bagnaia’s championship proves they’ve built a winning machine. However, it won’t be a cakewalk for Marquez.
