Navigating the NCAA Journey
Paez began his NCAA career with the Austin Peay Governors, where he spent four seasons from 2019 to 2023. His second season was especially notable, as he averaged 8.9 points per game. This period coincided with the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, which kept him separated from his family but deeply connected to the game.
“Statistically, it was my best year, but it was also tough. The conditions we faced and the adjustments we had to make were far from easy,” he reflected.
After his time at Austin Peay, Paez transferred to Southern Louisiana, where he continues to play. However, his journey hasn’t been without setbacks, including an injury that limited him to just five games in the 2023-24 season.
“I was in my fifth year, finishing my degree, when I got injured in December 2023. That setback gave me the chance to play this year. Honestly, I needed that break from basketball to rediscover myself and learn how to take better care of my body. Now, I’m making the most of this season,” Paez explained.
Eyeing a professional Career
This season, “Chino” has appeared in 15 games, averaging 6.2 points and 2.1 assists. He has also demonstrated impressive shooting accuracy, with a 43.1% field goal percentage and a 42.9% success rate from beyond the arc. These stats reflect his readiness to take the leap into professional basketball, though he remains focused on finishing his college career on a high note.
“I’m taking it day by day, focusing on staying healthy. My ultimate goal has always been to play professionally, wherever that might potentially be,and to represent Venezuela.I haven’t yet decided on my next step,” said the point guard, who credits Diego Guevara as a mentor and a significant influence on his development as a leader on the court.
When Paez concludes his NCAA journey, he will join an elite group of Venezuelan players who have surpassed the 1,000-point milestone. He currently stands at 1,008 points, placing him ahead of Omar Walcott (829) and behind legends like:
