A Conversation with Neri Mamani: Championing Athletic Development in Cusco

Moderator: Today, we have the privilege of speaking with Neri Mamani, a distinguished Paralympic athlete who represented Peru at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Neri, thank you for joining us.Let’s dive into the recent launch ‍of the ⁣IPD Academy workshops in Cusco ‌and the broader IPD initiatives. ‌What are your thoughts on these developments?⁣

Neri Mamani: Thank you for having me. The IPD Academy launch in Cusco is a landmark moment for peruvian sports. It’s inspiring to see free access to training in disciplines like basketball, volleyball, athletics, and karate. ‍Programs like this lay the foundation for ⁣nurturing talent, especially in regions like Cusco, which has incredible athletic potential.

Moderator: You mentioned Cusco’s potential. The event highlighted the region’s cultural and athletic richness,⁢ blending sports demonstrations with traditional dances. Do you think this integration of culture and sport is essential for engaging young athletes?

Neri Mamani: Absolutely.Sports isn’t just about competition; it’s about identity and community. ‌Incorporating traditional dances and cultural elements into the event⁤ not only celebrates Cusco’s heritage but also makes the program more relatable⁤ for young participants. It’s a powerful way to connect with them on a personal level.

Moderator: Interesting point. now, Federico Tong, President of⁢ the IPD, emphasized ⁢the role of families‌ in nurturing talent. As an athlete who has risen to the international stage, how critical was your family’s support in your journey?

Neri Mamani: ‌My family was‌ my backbone. They believed in me when⁤ I needed it most. Federico Tong⁢ is absolutely right—families‌ play a vital role. They provide the emotional and ⁤logistical support that ⁢athletes, especially young ones, need to thrive. The IPD’s recognition of this is a step in the right direction.⁣

Moderator: Speaking of support, the IPD also unveiled a new high-performance centre in Cusco. How do you think this center will impact athletes in ‌the ⁣region? ⁢

Neri Mamani: The high-performance center is a game-changer. it’s not just about facilities; it’s about creating an ecosystem where athletes can train, recover, and grow. For Cusco’s athletes, this means access to ⁣world-class resources right in their backyard. It’s a critically important step toward leveling the playing field with athletes from more⁣ urbanized areas.

moderator: That’s a great perspective. ‌now, let’s ⁣talk about the nationwide expansion of⁣ the IPD ⁢Academy. With programs now operational in all 24 regions of Peru, do you think this will ⁤help bridge the gap in athletic development across the country?

Neri ⁣Mamani: Without a doubt. Peru’s diversity is its strength, but historically, athletic‍ opportunities have been concentrated in Lima. Expanding the IPD Academy to all regions ensures that talent is identified‍ and nurtured regardless of geography. It’s ‍about creating a pipeline of champions from every corner of Peru.
