Movistar Plus+ Amps Up Sports Coverage with New Channels
Movistar Plus+ is bolstering its sports offerings with the addition of two new channels, just in time for two major sporting events in January 2025: the Spanish Super Cup and the Australian Open. This move follows recent content additions like British public television programming (BBC), the hunting and fishing channel, and a selection of Hollywood blockbusters through movistar Hits.
Spanish Super Cup Takes Center Stage
Starting January 8th,Dial 52 will temporarily transform into a dedicated Spanish Super Cup channel, broadcasting all three matches of the competition. This includes the highly anticipated semifinals: FC Barcelona versus Athletic Club de bilbao and Real Madrid against RCD Mallorca. the potential for a thrilling final between two spanish giants in Saudi Arabia on January 12th adds to the excitement. After the Super Cup concludes, Dial 52 will revert to its regular programming, featuring the Copa del Rey, which has already delivered some surprising results in its round of 16 stage.
Real Madrid enters the Super Cup after a controversial victory at Mestalla and a commanding 5-0 win over Deportivo Minera in the copa del Rey. Meanwhile, RCD Mallorca, eliminated from the Copa del Rey by Pontevedra, a team from the 2RFEF division, will be looking to make a strong showing in the Super Cup. Barcelona aims to put the administrative blunder surrounding the Olmo case behind them and overcome their recent slump under coach Hansi Flick. Their opponents, Athletic Club, the reigning Copa del Rey champions, narrowly escaped defeat against Logroñés, advancing only after a penalty shootout.

Spanish Super Cup and Aussie Open in 4k: A chat wiht Tennis Legend, Arantxa Sánchez vicario
We’re excited to welcome former world No.1 tennis player and Spanish icon, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, to discuss the latest sports news from Movistar Plus+. Arantxa, thanks so much for joining us!
ASV: Its a pleasure to be here!
Let’s dive right in. Movistar Plus+ is adding two brand new channels for the upcoming Spanish Super Cup and Australian Open. What are your thoughts on these additions?
ASV: Accessible sports coverage is vital, and adding dedicated channels for such prestigious events like the Super Cup and Australian Open shows a commitment to tennis and football fans in Spain. It’s fantastic news! I’m notably excited about the Australian Open in stunning 4K. Being able to witness the power and finesse of these players in such high definition will be an incredible experience for viewers.
That 4K experience for the Australian Open is definitely something to look forward to! Speaking of the Australian Open, this year is shaping up to be a real showdown. What are your predictions? Djokovic and Sinner will surely be tough to beat, but Carlos Alcaraz seems determined to add Melbourne to his trophy cabinet. What do you think matters most for him this year?
ASV: Carlos is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with. He’s already achieved so much at such a young age. I think the key for him, besides his extraordinary talent, will be mental fortitude. He needs to believe he can win this, stay focused, and handle the pressure that comes with being a top contender.
There’s no doubt he can handle pressure. He’s a cool cat on the court. But back to the Super Cup, two spanish giants, Real Madrid and Barcelona, are potential finalists. Real Madrid seems to be regaining its mojo, while Barcelona has been struggling recently. Who do you think has the edge?
ASV: The Super Cup is always exciting. Real Madrid’s confidence is back after securing a 5-0 victory in the Copa del Rey, but Barcelona is a different beast altogether. It’s not just about form on the day, but also the history between these teams. I believe it will be a close match, with Barcelona possibly having a slight edge. They’ll be hungry to prove themselves after a few hiccups.
Great points, Arantxa. It’s clear you’ve analyzed the contenders carefully. We’re excited to see how these tournaments unfold!
