NBA Star Isaiah Hartenstein Invests in Ulm Basketball
Isaiah Hartenstein, a 26-year-old NBA player for the Oklahoma City Thunder, is making waves in the German basketball scene. following in the footsteps of Dennis Schröder (Braunschweig), Hartenstein is the second NBA professional to invest in a Bundesliga team. His investment group, the “Hartenstein Group,” which includes his father Florian and former Ulm player Adam Hess, is set to acquire up to ten percent of the club.
In an exclusive interview with BILD, Hartenstein revealed his vision for his future involvement with the Ulm team.
Supporting Young Talent: Hartenstein’s Focus
Hartenstein emphasized his intention to be a supportive presence rather than a disruptive force. “I won’t be imposing myself or trying to overhaul everything at the club.Ulm is already doing great work, which is precisely why I chose this project,” he stated. “If I see an possibility to contribute,I’ll certainly share my thoughts. However, my primary focus is on helping young players realize thier full potential. I’ll always have an open ear. The players can count on me in the future.”
Ulm’s track record of developing players who have gone on to the NBA was a key factor in Hartenstein’s decision. Recent examples include Juan Núñez (Spain) and Pacôme Dadiet (France), who were drafted in the summer. Ben Saraf (Israel) and Noa Essengue, both 18, are also considered strong prospects for the 2025 draft.
“Since entering the NBA,I’ve wanted to be part of a German project that nurtures young talent and helps them reach the NBA. This wasn’t available during my time. Ulm has done an exceptional job in recent years,” Hartenstein shared.
A Hands-On Approach
Hartenstein plans to be actively involved with the Ulm team, aiming to visit at least once during the summer for an extended period. He is also exploring the possibility of organizing a basketball camp for both children and experienced players. “I’m a big advocate for that,” he added. This investment by Hartenstein highlights the growing trend of NBA players seeking to contribute to the growth of basketball in Europe. It also underscores Ulm’s reputation as a breeding ground for future NBA stars.
Isaiah Hartenstein: Investing in the Future
Welcome back to the Courtside Chat, basketball fans! Today, we have a very special guest – former NBA player and basketball analyst, Steve Kerr.
steve, thanks for joining us today. We’re talking about a fascinating growth in German basketball: NBA star Isaiah Hartenstein’s investment in Ulm. What are your initial thoughts on this move?
Steve Kerr: well, it’s fantastic news for Ulm and for German basketball as a whole. Hartenstein has proven himself to be a phenomenal talent on the court, and now he’s taking a real leadership role off the court by investing in the next generation. It shows a real commitment to the development of the game.
Exactly! Hartenstein mentioned his desire to support young talent, particularly citing Ulm’s recent success in developing NBA-caliber players. Does this resonate with your experiences in identifying and nurturing young talent?
Steve Kerr: Absolutely.Identifying raw talent is one thing, but nurturing it,creating a system that fosters growth – that’s the real key. Ulm seems to have found the formula.
Look at Juan Núñez and Pacôme Dadiet, both drafted this summer. Those are prime examples of Ulm’s ability to develop young prospects.
Hartenstein also highlighted the lack of such opportunities during his own journey. How critically important is it for young players to have access to these kinds of development programs?
Steve Kerr: It’s crucial. These programs provide a competitive environment, access to top-level coaching, and a pathway to reach their full potential. Don’t underestimate the impact of mentorship either. Hartenstein’s experience and guidance will be invaluable to the young players at Ulm.
Do you think we’ll see more NBA players following Hartenstein’s lead, investing in overseas teams and contributing to grassroots development?
Steve Kerr: I certainly hope so.
This is a win-win situation.
It benefits the overseas teams by providing resources and expertise, and it allows NBA players to give back to the sport and leave a lasting legacy.
We’ve already seen Dennis Schröder invest in Braunschweig, and now Hartenstein in Ulm.
This coudl be the start of a trend.
Absolutely, a very positive one at that. What advice would you give to aspiring basketball players hoping to emulate Hartenstein’s success?
Steve Kerr: Hard work, dedication, and a passion for the game are non-negotiable. But just as important is to be a good teammate, to embrace learning, and to be open to new experiences.Hartenstein’s investment in Ulm shows that leadership comes in many forms, both on and off the court.
Thank you for those inspiring words, Steve. We’re excited to see what the future holds for Isaiah Hartenstein and the Ulm basketball club. Fans, what are your thoughts on Hartenstein’s investment?
