From High School Baseball to the Kagoshima Railway Bureau: Norifumi nishimura’s Journey
Norifumi Nishimura,a standout athlete who clinched the stealth base title four years in a row from 1986 to 1989 and secured the top batting title in 1990,began his career with Lotte after being drafted in 5th place from the Kagoshima Railway Bureau in 1981. Despite his passion for baseball, nishimura’s decision to pursue a career at the railway bureau was driven by a desire for stability. “I didn’t want to play baseball forever; I needed a secure job,” he explained.
Nishimura, who had never considered attending university, set his sights on a position at the Japanese National Railways, inspired by his uncle’s career there. “It’s similar to being a civil servant—stable and secure. I envisioned working until retirement and receiving benefits,” he shared. Though, the competition was fierce, with the employment ratio at the Kagoshima Railway bureau exceeding 30:1, making it a daunting challenge even for top university graduates.
Following advice from his seniors, Nishimura decided to try out for the railway bureau’s baseball club in late October. “I thought it was impossible,” he admitted, recalling the three days he spent attempting to secure a spot. Later, he discovered that the club had already filled its new member slots.
When asked about his strengths, Nishimura confidently replied, “I’m fast.” He proved this by outrunning approximately 20 other active club members in a 100-meter dash. “I was lucky it was the off-season,” he humbly noted, though his performance undoubtedly left an impression. Despite being a temporary employee, he managed to overcome the initial hurdles.
“I Practiced with the Thought of Quitting After a Year or two”
While Nishimura was grateful for the possibility, he struggled with the idea of continuing baseball. “I joined the japan National Railways to secure a stable job,so I wanted to quit baseball instantly. I practiced with the mindset that I might leave after a year or two,” he revealed, admitting that he wasn’t fully committed at the time.
His daily routine involved performing chores like weeding and painting at Kagoshima Station from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by baseball practice in the afternoon. Some colleagues criticized him behind his back, even labeling him a “pay thief.” Despite these challenges, Nishimura’s perseverance eventually led to a turning point in his life.
By his third year in adult baseball, professional scouts began to take notice. After a loss in the Kyushu tournament qualifying round during his fourth year, Nishimura interviewed with scouts from six teams. “I didn’t think thay’d be interested in someone like me,” he recalled. At the time, there were also “undrafted” players, and Nishimura approached the process with skepticism, unsure if it would lead to anything critically important.
