The Bronx Bomber Returns: A Conversation with World Series Champion, David Cone
Welcome back to “in the Dugout,” folks! Today, we’re joined by a true Yankees legend, a World Series champion and baseball analyst extraordinaire, David Cone. David, thanks for taking the time to chat with us today.
David Cone: My pleasure. Always great to talk Yankees baseball!
Let’s dive right in. andrew Velazquez is back in pinstripes. What are your initial thoughts on this move by the Yankees?
DC: Well, it’s certainly a move that speaks to the Yankees’ desire for depth and versatility.Velazquez has proven to be a solid defender, especially at shortstop, and his ability to play multiple positions makes him a valuable asset off the bench.
Now,Velazquez hasn’t exactly set the league on fire offensively. Do you think he can contribute meaningfully at the plate this season?
DC: It’s true, his bat hasn’t been his strongest tool, but he’s shown flashes of potential. I think the key for him will be to find a consistent approach at the plate and make solid contact. If he can do that, he could surprise some people.
I agree. Like you said, his defense is his calling card. how crucial is that defensive versatility for a team like the Yankees, especially considering they’ve made some significant acquisitions this off-season?
DC: It’s incredibly critically important. Look, you can never have too many good defenders, especially in a division as competitive as the AL East.
Having a guy like Velazquez who can play multiple positions gives Aaron Boone a lot of options, allows him to match up strategically, and gives key starters a chance to rest when needed.
Speaking of those acquisitions, the Yankees have added some big names like Paul Goldschmidt, Max Fried, and Jonathan Loaisiga.Do you think these moves address the weaknesses the team exhibited last season?
DC: Absolutely. They’ve addressed the pitching staff, added some much-needed power to the lineup, and brought in some veteran leadership. On paper, this team looks incredibly strong.
Do you beleive Velazquez will see significant playing time, or is he primarily an insurance policy?
DC: I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get some starts, especially early in the season. it really depends on how the other guys perform and how Boone wants to handle matchups. But even if he’s not a starter, he’s a valuable piece to have on the bench.
Let’s shift gears a bit. Velazquez’s story is a classic one of perseverance and resilience. Do you think his experience in the Puerto Rican Winter League will benefit him as he guns for a spot on the roster?
DC: Absolutely. Staying active and competitive during the off-season is crucial for any player, especially for a guy fighting for a roster spot.
It shows dedication, keeps the tools sharp, and maybe even allows him to work on new things under different circumstances.
Velazquez is living a dream, right? Coming back to the team he grew up rooting for
DC: You bet! There’s something special about playing for your hometown team, especially one as storied as the Yankees.
I can imagine the scene – stepping onto the field at Yankee Stadium in pinstripes. What advice would you give to him in this homecoming moment?
DC: Savor every moment, andrew.Soaking it all in. Embrace the expectations, the energy of the crowd. Don’t be afraid to lean on the veterans, they’ve been there, done that. And most importantly, just play your game.
Excellent advice, David. Thanks for sharing your insights. We’ve covered a lot of ground today!
DC: It’s been a pleasure. I’m excited to see what Velazquez can bring to this team. Go Yankees!
