Spreading holiday cheer: Palencia Baloncesto and Red Cross Bring Comfort to Hospital Patients
The holiday season can be a arduous time for those facing illness or hospitalization. Recognizing this,Palencia Baloncesto, the city’s basketball team, partnered with the Palencia Red Cross to bring joy and support to patients at both the Río Carrión hospital and the Palencia hospital.
This heartwarming initiative, titled “Against Unwanted Loneliness… I AM WITH YOU,” saw over 700 Palencia residents, including many children, pen letters of encouragement to those feeling isolated. Along with these heartfelt messages, the team also delivered cuddly stuffed animals collected during their last game, Super Agropal Palencia.
Chema González, captain of Super Agropal Palencia, personally delivered these gifts, sharing smiles and words of comfort with patients. “We brought you this letter from the Red Cross and also this stuffed animal, in case you have a grandson or granddaughter,” he said to one patient, eliciting an emotional response.
The team, accompanied by representatives from the Red Cross, visited various hospital rooms, spreading holiday cheer and reminding patients that they are not alone. luis Guil, the coach, emphasized the importance of this gesture, stating, ”In a time like this, visiting people who are in the hospital, who are having a hard time, when we have many things to be thankful for by playing basketball, sharing some time with them is truly meaningful.”
The visit extended to the children’s ward, where the team brought joy and distraction to young patients spending the holidays away from home.
This collaborative effort between Palencia Baloncesto and the Red Cross exemplifies the power of community support and the importance of spreading kindness, especially during challenging times. As the Liverpool anthem reminds us, “You’ll never Walk Alone,” and this message resonated deeply with the patients who received these thoughtful gestures.
