Royal Antwerp FC can take pride in their narrow 1-0 victory in the first leg of the cup, keeping their hopes alive for a third consecutive cup final appearance. The upcoming weeks will be crucial as they aim to maintain their momentum.
Despite the 1-0 loss at Lotto Park, Royal Antwerp FC managed to hold their ground. “While Antwerp deserved a goal, Anderlecht created the majority of the opportunities. A scoreline of 3-1 wouldn’t have been unrealistic,” Patrick Goots candidly stated in Gazet van Antwerpen.
goots observed that Antwerp struggled to match the intensity when Anderlecht’s youthful squad upped their tempo. “Players like Alderweireld, Riedewald, Odoi, Chery, and Janssen lacked the natural reaction speed to keep up. Kerk was the sole player who injected pace into Antwerp’s attack, supported by Ondrejka, who was introduced early in the second half.”
Goots also expressed disappointment in Corbanie’s performance, a player he had previously praised. The defender had a night to forget at Anderlecht.
“I’ve often championed Corbanie, suggesting he play as a right wingback over Valencia, but my suggestions were dismissed. There’s no other way to put it—Corbanie was repeatedly exposed defensively and was rightly substituted by Renders,” Goots added.
Antwerp has consistently struggled against top-tier teams in away matches. Though, their cup aspirations remain intact. Goots estimates a 55% chance for Antwerp to secure a spot in their third consecutive cup final.
“They have a slight edge, thanks to the home advantage at Bosuil and anderlecht’s upcoming European commitments. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Antwerp face Genk at Heysel on May 1,” he concluded.
Exclusive Interview: Debating Royal Antwerp FC’s Cup aspirations with Former Coach Marc Wilmots
Moderator: Welcome, everyone, to another edition of Sports Insights, where we dive deep into the latest happenings in the world of football. today, we’re joined by none other than Marc Wilmots, former Belgian national team coach and a respected figure in European football. Marc, thank you for joining us.
Marc Wilmots: Thank you for having me. It’s always a pleasure to discuss football, especially when it involves Belgian clubs like Royal antwerp FC.
Moderator: Let’s jump right into it. Royal Antwerp FC secured a narrow 1-0 victory in the first leg of the cup, keeping their hopes alive for a third consecutive cup final appearance. What are your thoughts on their performance?
Marc Wilmots: It’s a solid result, no doubt. A 1-0 win in a cup tie, especially away from home, is always valuable.Though, as Patrick Goots pointed out in gazet van Antwerpen, the scoreline could have been much worse for Antwerp. Anderlecht created numerous opportunities, and a 3-1 loss wouldn’t have been unrealistic. Antwerp’s defense held firm, but they were fortunate not to concede more.
Moderator: Goots also mentioned that Antwerp struggled to match Anderlecht’s intensity, notably when their younger players upped the tempo. Do you agree with that assessment?
Marc Wilmots: Absolutely. Anderlecht’s youthful energy was evident, and Antwerp’s more experienced players like Alderweireld and Riedewald seemed a step behind. Kerk was the standout for Antwerp, injecting much-needed pace into their attack. But Antwerp lacked the dynamism to keep up. It’s a concern, especially when facing teams that press high and play with intensity.
moderator: Speaking of concerns, Goots was particularly critical of corbanie’s performance, suggesting he was repeatedly exposed defensively. Do you think Antwerp’s coaching staff made the right call by substituting him?
Marc Wilmots: It’s a tough one. Corbanie has shown promise in the past, and goots himself has advocated for him to play as a right wingback. But on that night, he clearly struggled. Defensive lapses can be costly in cup ties, and Renders’ decision to substitute him was justified. Though, I’d like to see Corbanie given another chance. Young players need time to grow, and one bad performance shouldn’t define him.
moderator: Antwerp has consistently struggled against top-tier teams in away matches. Do you think this trend could hinder their cup aspirations?
Marc Wilmots: It’s a valid concern.Away form is crucial in knockout competitions, and Antwerp’s inability to perform against stronger teams on the road is a recurring issue. That said, they have the home advantage in the second leg, and Anderlecht’s European commitments could play into Antwerp’s hands. fatigue and squad rotation might give Antwerp the edge they need to progress.
Moderator: Goots estimates a 55% chance for Antwerp to reach the final. Do you agree with that prediction?
Marc Wilmots: I’d say it’s a fair assessment. Antwerp has the experience of reaching the final in the past two seasons, and playing at Bosuil Stadium will be a meaningful boost. However, Anderlecht is a formidable opponent, and their European schedule might not be as disruptive as some think. It’s going to be a tight contest, but I’d give Antwerp a slight edge, perhaps closer to 60%.
Moderator: Marc, what’s your advice for Antwerp as they prepare for the second leg?
Marc Wilmots: They need to focus on two key areas: defensive solidity and attacking efficiency. Anderlecht will come at them hard, so Antwerp must be disciplined at the back. On the flip side, they need to capitalize on their chances. Kerk and Ondrejka showed glimpses of what they can do, but Antwerp needs more from their attacking players. If they can strike the right balance, they’ll be in a strong position to reach the final.
Moderator: Thank you, Marc, for your insights. It’s always a pleasure to hear your perspective.
Marc wilmots: My pleasure. Let’s hope for an exciting second leg!
