Paulo gazzaniga: Girona’s Undisputed Guardian
At 32 years old, Paulo Gazzaniga has cemented his place as Girona’s undisputed number one goalkeeper. As arriving three seasons ago, he’s been a model of consistency, playing every minute of the league campaign this season. this remarkable feat has seen him accumulate an impressive 2,160 minutes across all competitions, making him the most-used player in La Liga for the 2024/25 season, according too data journalist Fran Martínez.Gazzaniga’s journey to becoming Girona’s stalwart began with a desire to compete and earn playing time. While he initially faced competition from Juan Carlos, who had helped secure Girona’s promotion, Gazzaniga quickly established himself as the first choice. His debut on October 23rd, 2022, marked the beginning of an uninterrupted run in goal, a testament to his unwavering form.
Gazzaniga’s dominance is evident in his minutes played. He leads the La Liga charts, closely followed by Jan Oblak and Álex Remiro, who have both clocked 2,070 minutes. While five other goalkeepers have also played every minute of the league season, Gazzaniga’s consistency extends beyond just La Liga, showcasing his importance to Girona across all competitions.
In contrast, Ørjan Nyland has seen the least action, falling short of the 1,000-minute mark.
The arrival of pau López on loan from Olympique de Marseille in the summer was intended to provide competition for Gazzaniga. though, López’s season has been hampered by injury, limiting him to a single Copa del Rey appearance. Juan Carlos stepped in for that match, but Girona’s disappointing exit from the competition solidified Gazzaniga’s position as the undisputed first choice.
With the league season nearing its halfway point and the Champions League campaign likely concluding this month, Gazzaniga’s place between the posts remains unchallenged. His remarkable consistency and unwavering performances have made him an integral part of Girona’s success.
A Girona Guardian: In-Depth with goalkeeping Legend, Pepe Reina
Welcome back to “Between the Posts,” where we delve into the world of goalkeeping with football legends, insightful analysis, and engaging debate. Today’s guest needs little introduction. With a career spanning over two decades, and a trophy cabinet glistening with silverware from some of Europe’s top clubs, Pepe Reina joins us to discuss the meteoric rise of Girona’s undisputed number one, Paulo Gazzaniga.
Pepe, thanks for joining us. Gazzaniga has been rightly making headlines with his remarkable consistency this season. 2,160 minutes played, that’s the most of any player in La Liga – quite a feat, wouldn’t you say?
Pepe Reina: Absolutely, it’s incredibly remarkable. To be playing every minute of a campaign is a testament to both your fitness and form.Gazzaniga has clearly established himself as the main man at Girona, and that kind of consistency is invaluable to any team’s success.
He wasn’t always the undisputed first choice, though, was he? Initially, there was competition from Juan carlos. What do you think helped Gazzaniga claim the starting spot so firmly?
Pepe Reina: I think it comes down to a combination of factors. Gazzaniga clearly has the talent and ability. He’s been a solid keeper throughout his career, playing at a high level in the Premier League. When he arrived at Girona, he probably saw it as an chance to become a number one again and show what he’s capable of.
And you can see that drive in his performance. When you have that hunger and desire to be the best, it shows. He’s proven himself time and time again and, unfortunately for Juan Carlos, hasn’t looked back.
This season, Girona brought in Pau López on loan, a keeper with La Liga experience. Did you anticipate a fiercer battle for the number one spot?
Pepe Reina: On paper, López’s arrival definitely looked like it would create competition, given his experience. But unfortunately, injuries can be a cruel twist of fate. When you lose a significant portion of a season to injury as a goalkeeper, it’s difficult to catch up and reclaim your position.
Gazzaniga has been solid throughout, and Girona’s decision to stick with him, even with Lopez available after his return from injury, speaks volumes about the confidence he’s earned.
Looking forward, with the Champions League campaign likely winding down, do you see Fabio Simeoni giving Gazzaniga any time off?
Pepe Reina: That’s a great question. it’s a long season, and Gazzaniga has played an incredible amount of minutes. Iit wouldn’t be surprising if Simeoni,at some point, rotates him.
Girona will need him fresh for the league campaign, which is ultimately where their primary focus will be.
However, knowing football and the competitive nature of goalkeepers, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gazzaniga battling tooth and nail to remain in goal for every game possible.
Now, I want to open this up to our audience. What are your thoughts on Paulo Gazzaniga? Do you agree he’s been Girona’s key player this season?
