Polisportiva Nazareno: 35 Years of Sports, Inclusion, and Community Growth

by Davide Setti

Over three decades ago, a group of young athletes, inspired by Marco Viola’s vision, formed teh first Nazareno basketball ⁢team. Today, many of those original members remain actively involved, teaching sports, fostering community, and sharing the joy of physical activity. What began ‌in 1989 as a modest ‍team of a dozen players⁢ training at the “Kennedy” gym in Viale Peruzzi has blossomed⁢ into one of the most prominent sports centers‌ in the Carpi ⁣region. With nearly 1,000 members—including coaches, staff, managers, and athletes across various disciplines—the Polisportiva Nazareno has become a cornerstone⁣ of local sports. “The core⁢ values‌ haven’t changed,” says Davide Testi, now president of the institution and a former player on that inaugural ‍team. “We’re still committed too inclusion, ensuring everyone⁢ has the ⁣chance to play, and fostering camaraderie and well-being. Our members span‌ all ages, from toddlers as young ‌as 2 to seniors in their 70s.”

The evolution of Nazareno has been steady and purposeful. While basketball remains ⁤a cornerstone—highlighted⁤ by the introduction of ⁤the iconic “3×3” tournament in Piazza Martiri in 1995 and the pivotal merger with La Patria in 1998—the organization has expanded⁤ into diverse disciplines. Artistic gymnastics was added in 1992, thanks to Antonella Ascari and Paolo Marcato, followed by cheerleading in 2003, with the Flames team competing internationally, including at the 2023 World Championships in Orlando. Multisport programs launched in 2016, and recent years have seen collaborations with the Blue Team, a basketball group for autistic athletes, as well as the establishment of a volleyball sector led by Tai Aguero, a celebrated player for both Italy and Cuba. “There hasn’t been a single defining moment in our 35-year journey,” Testi reflects. “Instead, it’s been⁣ a series of small, meaningful steps. Our ⁣facilities have evolved too.We started at the ‘Kennedy’ gym but now ⁣manage four municipal spaces, including the solidarietà⁤ gym in Piazzale Bob Marley, the newly inaugurated ‘NJoy’ gym in via Lombardy, and the ‘Ciccio Siligardi’ gym near⁢ ‘Focherini.’ Volleyball practices at the Liceo Fanti‌ gym.” The recent⁢ opening of the ‘NJoy’ gym, a project funded by the conversion of a former industrial warehouse, marks a new chapter for Nazareno. Looking ahead to 2025,the organization plans to host ⁢Blue Day on April 2nd,World Autism awareness⁣ Day,alongside summer events like “Nazzacamp,” “Nazzamare,” and “Nazza in festa” during La Carpi Summer sport.

“One ⁢of our most exciting milestones,” Testi adds, “is the participation of five of our athletes in the World Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, Florida, this April.Representing Italy in the Senior All Girl Elite category, Arianna Dell’archpriest, Marta Scacchetti Lucacalce, Sara Garuti, Francesca Feoli, and Elisa Santini, alongside coach Sara Sabattini, will proudly carry the Nazareno name onto the global stage.”
