(Incheon = Yonhap News) Reporter Son Hyun-gyu = The prosecution has sought a two-year prison term for Kang Dong-hee (59), a former professional basketball coach, who faces charges of embezzling substantial funds from a basketball academy he once managed.
On the 21st, legal sources revealed that the prosecution recommended this sentence during a hearing presided over by Judge Kim Eun-hye of the 17th Criminal Division at the Incheon District Court. Kang is accused of embezzlement and breach of trust.
In justifying the request, the prosecution emphasized the significant financial harm inflicted on the victims.
Additionally, the prosecution urged Judge Kim to impose prison terms ranging from one to one and a half years on two of the four corporate officials from the basketball academy, who face similar charges.
Meanwhile, the cases of the two other officials, who confessed to the allegations during the trial, have been set aside, and their hearings are yet to commence.
The final verdict for Kang and his associates is slated for April 24 at the Incheon District Court.
Kang and his co-defendants are accused of misappropriating 160 million won from the academy’s funds between May and October 2018.
furthermore, during the same period, they allegedly caused additional financial harm by using 21 million won from the academy’s budget to cover legal fees and secure a new office space.
Following an examination, the prosecution charged Kang and his associates in January 2023, concluding that the misused funds were diverted for personal purposes.
Despite attending all nine trial sessions over two years without detention, Kang consistently denied the allegations, asserting, “I did not conspire with the other defendants nor derive any personal gain.”
It was also disclosed that Kang, once celebrated as the ‘Wizard of the Court’ during his playing career, accepted 47 million won from brokers in 2011 to manipulate professional basketball games by fielding specific players.
this led to a 10-month prison sentence in 2013, which was upheld on appeal, and his subsequent expulsion from the Korea Professional Basketball Association (KBL) in September of that year.
