Spreading Holiday Cheer: A Conversation with Baseball Legend, Sammy Sosa
On this episode of “Beyond the Game,” we’re joined by none other than baseball legend Sammy Sosa! Welcome, Sammy!
sammy Sosa: Thanks for having me! It’s always great too talk about giving back.
Sammy, the Cristian Pimentel Foundation just held its annual toy distribution in Villa Francisca. What are your thoughts on athletes using their platforms to support their communities?
Sammy Sosa: I think it’s fantastic. It’s incredibly meaningful for athletes to remember where they come from and to use their influence for good. Sports bring people together, and athletes have a unique possibility to inspire and make a real difference in the lives of others.
the article mentions that Adolfo Sánchez, a Cincinnati Reds prospect, was instrumental in making this event happen. How crucial is it for younger athletes to lead by example like this?
Sammy Sosa: It’s crucial. Young athletes look up to established players like myself and Adolfo.
When they see us giving back,it shows them that success isn’t just about what happens on the field. It’s about being a good person, a responsible citizen, and contributing to society.
Do you believe organized sports have a duty to encourage community engagement among their athletes?
Sammy Sosa: Absolutely. I think teams and leagues can play a huge role in fostering this kind of involvement. They can create programs, partner with local organizations, and provide opportunities for players to connect with their communities.
It’s a win-win situation – the community benefits, and the athletes develop a deeper sense of purpose and connection.
The article highlights that the Cristian Pimentel Foundation is committed to “social responsibility.” What does that term mean to you in the context of sports?
Sammy Sosa: For me,social responsibility in sports means using the platform and resources we have to address social issues, support underprivileged communities, and inspire positive change. It’s about understanding that we have a responsibility that extends beyond the playing field.
Do you think athletes should focus solely on their sport or should they speak out on social issues?
Sammy Sosa: I believe athletes have a right and a responsibility to speak out on issues that matter to them.
They have a large platform and a voice that can reach millions. Ignoring critically important social issues as it’s “not their place” is a missed opportunity.
Of course, it’s important to be thoughtful and respectful in the way they express their views.
What advice would you give to young athletes who are passionate about giving back but don’t know where to start?
Sammy Sosa: start small.
Volunteer at a local organization, mentor young kids, or organize a charity event.
Every little bit helps, and the feeling of making a difference is incredibly rewarding.
Remember, even small acts of kindness can have a ripple effect and inspire others to do the same.
