Paris Saint-germain’s latest acquisition, Khvicha kvaratskhelia, has encountered an unexpected setback. The Georgian star, who recently joined from Napoli, will be sidelined for PSG’s upcoming UEFA Champions League showdown against Manchester City this Wednesday.
As reported by L’Equipe, Kvaratskhelia’s ineligibility stems from Napoli’s failure to qualify for European competitions this season, having finished 10th in Serie A last year. Consequently, he will be relegated to the stands during the crucial match.
The Champions League’s regulations stipulate that only players registered in the squad list submitted to UEFA by September 3 are eligible to participate in the group stage under the new format.
This rule also renders Kvaratskhelia unavailable for PSG’s clash with Stuttgart on January 29. Though, if PSG progresses to the knockout stages, they can register up to three new players by February 6, 2025, at 11:59 pm.
Kvaratskhelia remains on Napoli’s roster until the conclusion of matchday 8 in the league phase, meaning PSG will miss his services for two critical games. Similarly, Donyell Malen, who transferred from Borussia Dortmund to Aston Villa, faces the same predicament.
Unofficial reports suggest PSG shelled out 70 million euros, plus additional bonuses, to secure the Georgian winger. kvaratskhelia has taken over the iconic number 7 jersey, previously worn by Mbappé, which had been vacant since the French superstar’s departure last summer.

Moderator: Welcome, everyone, to today’s special interview. We’re joined by legendary football manager Arsène Wenger, who needs no introduction. Thank you for being here, Arsène.
Arsène Wenger: Thank you for having me. It’s always a pleasure to discuss the beautiful game.
Moderator: Let’s dive right in. Paris Saint-germain’s recent signing, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, has been ruled out of their upcoming Champions League clash against Manchester City due to UEFA regulations. What’s your take on this situation?
Arsène Wenger: It’s certainly an unfortunate setback for both the player and the club.Kvaratskhelia is a phenomenal talent, as we saw during his time at Napoli. However, UEFA’s rules are clear: players must be registered by september 3 to participate in the group stage.napoli’s failure to qualify for European competitions this season complicates things further. PSG knew the regulations, so this isn’t entirely unexpected.
Moderator: Do you think UEFA’s rules are too restrictive, especially for clubs making mid-season signings?
Arsène Wenger: It’s a tricky balance. On one hand, you want clubs to have adaptability in the transfer market. On the other, you need clear regulations to maintain fairness and integrity in the competition. Personally, I think the rules are reasonable, but perhaps there’s room to revisit the registration deadlines, especially with the new Champions League format.
Moderator: Kvaratskhelia will also miss PSG’s clash against Stuttgart. How notable is this loss for PSG’s Champions League ambitions?
Arsène Wenger: It’s a blow, no doubt. Kvaratskhelia brings creativity, flair, and unpredictability to the attack. However, PSG has a deep squad with other world-class players who can step up. The key will be how luis Enrique adapts tactically in these critical games.
Moderator: Reports suggest PSG paid €70 million plus bonuses for Kvaratskhelia, who’s taken over Mbappé’s iconic number 7 jersey. Do you think the pressure of living up to that number will affect him?
Arsène Wenger: The number 7 jersey comes with immense expectations, especially at a club like PSG. Kvaratskhelia’s talent is undeniable, but he’ll need time to settle and prove himself. The price tag adds extra scrutiny, but I believe he has the mentality to handle it. He’s already shown he can perform on the biggest stages.
Moderator: What’s your overall assessment of PSG’s decision to sign Kvaratskhelia, considering the challenges they’re facing with his ineligibility?
Arsène Wenger: It’s a bold move, and I respect PSG’s ambition. Kvaratskhelia is a generational talent who can elevate their attack for years to come. While the timing of his signing isn’t ideal for the Champions League, it’s a long-term investment. PSG is building a team for the future, not just for one season.
Moderator: Lastly, what’s your advice for PSG fans who are disappointed about Kvaratskhelia’s absence in these crucial matches?
Arsène Wenger: Patience. Football is a marathon, not a sprint. Kvaratskhelia will have his moment to shine, and when he does, the wait will be worth it. For now, the focus should be on supporting the team and trusting the process.
Moderator: Thank you, Arsène, for your insights. It’s always enlightening to hear your perspective.
Arsène Wenger: My pleasure. Thank you for having me.
