Racing’s Defensive Reinforcements: An Inside Look with Former Defender Pablo Centurion
Racing Club is making waves this off-season,and the latest splash comes in the form of 25-year-old right back Raúl Chamorro.
Joining the “Academy” from Sarmiento de La Banda on a contract until December 2025, Chamorro adds to an extraordinary list of new signings under coach Diego Cocca. the flurry of activity also includes Maximiliano Gutiérrez, Matías Machado, santiago Churchi, Daniel Abello, and Guillermo Sánchez, covering key positions across the field.
To dissect these moves and get an expert viewpoint on Racing’s defensive bolstering, we sat down with former Racing defender, Pablo Centurion. Centurion, a veteran of the club’s backline during a successful period in the early 2000s, knows what it takes to excel in Racing’s demanding defence.
Moderator: Pablo, thanks for joining us. Looking at these signings, notably Chamorro, how do you see him fitting into Cocca’s system?
Pablo Centurion: Thanks for having me.Chamorro seems like a solid addition. He’s young, has experience at this level, and will be competing with Fabri lucas for that right-back spot. Cocca likes attacking fullbacks, so I expect Chamorro will need to contribute going forward as well as defensively.
Moderator: Do you think Chamorro will be a starter from day one, or will he need time to adapt to the Racing system?
Pablo Centurion: That’s a tough call. Lucas has been a reliable performer for Racing, so Cocca might ease Chamorro in gradually. But competition for places is always a good thing, it keeps everyone sharp.
Moderator: Racing’s defensive depth seems significantly improved this window. Is this somthing you think was needed, and do you think they’re now better equipped to challenge for silverware?
Pablo Centurion: Absolutely. Last season, they were vulnerable at times defensively. Adding a player like Abello, a seasoned centre-back, is huge. He’ll bring leadership and solidity to that backline. Coupled with Chamorro and the returning players, they look much stronger defensively.
Moderator: With all these signings,do you think there’s a risk of disrupting team chemistry,or do you believe competition will breed success?
Pablo Centurion: That’s always a concern when there’s a lot of turnover. But Cocca is a smart coach. He knows how to manage personalities and create a positive environment. As long as the players buy into his system and work hard, I don’t see it being a major issue.
Moderator: a question for the fans. Do you think Racing has done enough to challenge for the title this season, or are they still a few pieces away? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
