## A Life dedicated to Catalonia: Remembering Ricard Lobo
Ricard Lobo, a prominent figure in Catalan public life, passed away at his Barcelona home on January 4th at teh age of 88. [[1]] Lobo, known for his unwavering commitment to ethical service and rigorous intellect, leaves behind a legacy deeply intertwined wiht Catalonia’s political and cultural landscape.
Lobo’s journey was marked by a profound dedication to his beliefs. During the tumultuous period of the Franco dictatorship, he actively participated in the Non-Aligned Group alongside figures like Josep Dalmau and Lluís Maria Xirinacs. His involvement in the creation of the Assembly of Catalonia in 1971 and his subsequent arrest in 1973 during a police raid on the church of Maria Mitjancera, highlight his unwavering commitment to Catalan autonomy.
Lobo’s intellectual prowess was evident in his diverse academic background. Holding a doctorate in theology from Rome, he also earned degrees in philosophy and letters, as well as law, from Barcelona. His monastic life at Montserrat and Sant Miquel de Cuixà further enriched his understanding of Catalan culture and spirituality.
Following the return of President Jordi Pujol from exile, Lobo was appointed director of the Official Journal of the Generalitat (DOGC), a position he held for nearly three decades. This appointment reflected his deep understanding of Catalan institutions and his commitment to clear governance.
Beyond his official duties,Lobo remained actively engaged in Catalan civil society. He joined the Call to Solidarity in 1981 and was a founding member of the Club Arnau de Vilanova, a platform for intellectual discourse and reflection. in 2011, he lent his support to the creation of the Catalan National Assembly (ANC), demonstrating his enduring commitment to Catalan self-determination.
Lobo’s contributions extended beyond politics. He was a prolific writer, authoring several works of narrative and essay. His dedication to Catalonia was recognized with prestigious awards, including the President Macià Medal in 2005 and the Serra i Moret Civic Award in 2007.
A vigil will be held in lobo’s honor on Tuesday, January 7th, at 9:30 a.m. at the Sant Gervasi funeral home,followed by a ceremony at 1:30 p.m. His passing marks the loss of a dedicated public servant and a passionate advocate for Catalan identity.
