A Night of Festivity: Rot-Weiß Visbek Honors its Champions
The Benedict School’s sports hall was abuzz with excitement on Saturday, January 11th. Adorned in festive decorations, the venue hosted the annual sports ball of the esteemed Rot-Weiß Visbek club, welcoming over 800 guests. The board members,embodying the club’s warm and inclusive spirit,personally greeted each attendee with a handshake. This gesture underscored the strong sense of community that has defined the 101-year-old institution.
A highlight of the evening was the recognition of exceptional club members. Anticipation filled the air as guests eagerly awaited the announcement of the awardees. Melissa Schmedes was named Athlete of the year, a testament to her dedication and passion. After a accomplished career in soccer, Schmedes discovered a new sporting love in “jumping fitness.” As 2017, she has enthusiastically lead numerous groups, making this discipline an integral part of the club’s offerings. Chairman Burkhard Bramlage lauded Schmedes,stating,”Melissa is a true asset to our club.”
The title of Male Athlete of the Year went to the visibly moved Tobias Kostka.Bramlage praised Kostka, saying, “Tobias bleeds red and white. Listing all his contributions to the club would take far too long.” Kostka, a former managing director of the club, played a pivotal role in transforming the judo department, particularly for children and youth, into a resounding success story.
The first men’s football team was crowned Team of the Year, achieving the long-awaited promotion to the district league under the guidance of coach Andy Marischen. This triumph, achieved after a decade-long wait, was met with well-deserved celebration.
Bramlage also acknowledged the achievements of other nominated teams, including the U18 judo men’s team, who secured bronze at the North German Championships, the impressive third men’s team, and the A-youth team, who also earned promotion to the district league.
The evening also saw a heartfelt tribute to Heinz Bramlage, who dedicated over two decades to maintaining the club’s halls as a hall attendant.Chairman Bramlage humorously remarked,”Heinz always ensured our halls were impeccable – and that no one dared enter with dirty shoes.”
bramlage extended his gratitude to the numerous volunteers who made the event possible, emphasizing that “without their tireless efforts, such a stunning evening would be unimaginable.”
Mayor Gerd Meyer echoed these sentiments, commending the volunteers’ commitment, particularly in the youth sector. He proudly stated, “The achievements here, especially in nurturing young talent, are truly remarkable. We can all take pride in this.”

Tobias Kostka: Rot-Weiß Visbek is more than just a club for me; it’s family. I’ve spent a notable part of my life here, and the sense of community, the shared passion for sports, and the genuine care for one another have shaped me both personally and professionally.

While personal achievements are undeniably importent, the true essence of sport lies in giving back, sharing knowledge, and inspiring the next generation.
