The 2025 Santos coaching saga was a whirlwind of near misses and last-minute decisions. While Pedro Caixinha ultimately took the helm, the journey to his appointment was anything but straightforward.
Initially, argentine tactician Gustavo Quinteros seemed destined for Vila Belmiro. Negotiations had progressed considerably, with verbal agreements in place as early December. Santos officials made multiple trips to Buenos Aires, engaging in extensive discussions with Quinteros, both in person and virtually. Quinteros’ son, Sebastián, was even involved, contributing to the planning process by suggesting potential signings and assessing players for possible departures.
However, a last-minute snag derailed the deal. A scheduled contract signing on December 21st, a Sunday following Quinteros’ daughter’s wedding, was postponed at the coach’s request. This delay infuriated Santos fans, who had grown impatient with the protracted negotiations.
Seizing the chance, Santos’ new CEO, Pedro Martins, swiftly pivoted to Pedro Caixinha. Having already initiated contact with the Portuguese coach earlier that week, Martins secured his signature within a mere two days.
In a surprising twist of fate, Caixinha, who had previously been in talks with Grêmio, ended up at Santos, while Quinteros, who had been on the verge of joining Peixe, ultimately signed with Tricolor.

The Santos Saga: An inside Look with Legendary Coach Zé Ricardo
It’s a tale of near misses, last-minute decisions, and a coaching carousel that left santos fans on the edge of their seats. We’re diving deep into the 2025 Santos coaching saga with the help oflegendary Brazilian coach Zé Ricardo, who has seen it all in his decades navigating the stunning game.
Welcome, Zé Ricardo! Thank you for joining us. You’ve built a distinguished career in Brazilian football. What was your initial reaction when you heard about the whirlwind of events surrounding Santos’ search for their new coach?
Zé Ricardo: “Ah, the Santos saga! It’s a testament to the passion and pressure that surrounds this iconic club. I wasn’t entirely surprised, to be honest. Big clubs like Santos always attract a lot of interest. It’s a story that happens more frequently enough then you think.”
Truth be told, the Quinteros situation was quite dramatic. What do you make of the postponement of the contract signing? Was this a tactic, a sign of hesitation, or something else entirely?
Zé Ricardo: “It’s hard to say for sure without being in Quinteros’ shoes. Maybe he had some lingering doubts. Perhaps he felt the pressure of such a massive club. Or maybe—and this is speculation—there were some last-minute changes in his thinking. Whatever the reason, it put Santos in a very difficult position.”
In your experience, how crucial is timing in these high-stakes negotiations?
Zé Ricardo: “Timing is everything. In football, opportunities can disappear in the blink of an eye. In this case, Santos lost a valued prospect as of the delay, and Pedro martins, the new CEO, had to act swiftly. It shows how crucial decisiveness is in this buisness.”
Caixinha ultimately took the reins, but it almost went to Grêmio. You must have seen a lot of coaches switching teams in your time. What do you think motivates these last-minute changes of heart?
Zé Ricardo: “Many factors come into play. Sometimes it’s pure ambition. A better offer, a better project, a chance at a more prestigious club. it’s not always about the money; these coaches are driven by the pursuit of success and leaving their mark on the history of the game. “
Now we’re seeing Caixinha at Santos, and Quinteros at Grêmio. Talk about a twist of fate!
Zé Ricardo: ”football is full of surprises, isn’t it? This is what makes it so compelling. The paths of these two coaches have crossed in a unique way. only time will tell what they’ll achieve in their respective clubs.”
