Schick Shines as Leverkusen Dominates Augsburg
Bayer leverkusen’s Patrik Schick continued his remarkable goal-scoring streak, netting a brace in a resounding 4-1 victory over Augsburg on the final Bundesliga matchday of 2024. This performance brings Schick’s tally to an impressive 11 goals in just 13 Bundesliga appearances this season, solidifying his position as one of the league’s moast prolific strikers.
“I’m pleased to have contributed with two goals today,” Schick remarked after the match. “We executed our game plan effectively.”
Leverkusen’s dominance was evident from the outset. Nathan Tella stunned Augsburg with a brilliant goal within the first minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse by the home side.
The Czech international, Schick, then took center stage. In the 8th minute, a swift counter-attack saw piero Hincapié deliver a pinpoint pass to Schick, who expertly volleyed the ball past the Augsburg goalkeeper. Schick doubled his tally in the 19th minute, receiving a well-placed pass from Jeremie Frimpong and calmly slotting the ball home from close range.
Despite Jamie Gittens pulling one back for Augsburg in the 12th minute,Leverkusen remained in control. Schick nearly secured his second consecutive hat-trick in the 61st minute, but his shot was comfortably saved by Augsburg’s goalkeeper, Gregor Kobel.
While Schick’s performance was the highlight, Leverkusen’s overall display was a testament to their tactical discipline and attacking prowess.
Augsburg managed to reduce the deficit to 3-2 through Serho Guirassa in the 79th minute, but Leverkusen held firm to secure a well-deserved victory.
The win sees Leverkusen maintain their strong start to the season, while Augsburg remain in the lower half of the table.
Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund suffered a setback, losing 1-0 to an opponent. This marked their first scoreless outing in five games, potentially jeopardizing their position in the European qualification race. Dortmund’s woes were compounded by a depleted squad, with six players sidelined due to illness, adding to their existing list of injured and suspended players.

Mehmet, eleven goals in thirteen games is simply phenomenal. Schick seems unstoppable right now. What makes him such a perilous striker?
Mehmet Scholl:
You’re absolutely right, the boy is on fire! Schick’s combination of physical presence, composure in front of goal, and intelligent movement makes him a nightmare for defenders.
he’s not just a target man; he’s got the skills to create his own shots and the finishing touch to put them away.Leverkusen are feeding him the right balls too, which is vital for any striker.

Leverkusen’s win against Augsburg was a dominant display. Nathan Tella’s opening goal set the tone, and then Schick took over. Augsburg did pull one back, but Leverkusen always looked in control.
What impressed you most about Leverkusen’s performance?
Mehmet Scholl:
Their tactical discipline was key. Xabi Alonso has clearly instilled a strong work ethic and a clear game plan. They moved the ball around quickly, created chances from all areas, and were solid defensively.
The early goal certainly helped, but even when augsburg threatened, Leverkusen didn’t panic. They stuck to their game plan and deserved the win.

Dortmund, however, suffered a shock loss this weekend, their first scoreless outing in five games. injuries and illness seem to be taking their toll.
Do you think this defeat will substantially impact their European qualification hopes?
Mehmet Scholl:
It’s a setback, there’s no doubt whatsoever, but dortmund has the quality to overcome it.They’ve shown resilience before, and I expect them to bounce back.
However, this defeat highlights the importance of squad depth. With so many players out, Dortmund lacked their usual spark. If they want to challenge for Champions League spots, they need a deep squad to cope with these situations.
