The Municipality has unveiled the schedule for its annual school sports competitions, accompanied by a poster that encapsulates the event’s core message: “Sport in Schools: A Platform for Instilling Values.” This year, 31 schools from both the city and surrounding areas will participate, including first and second-level secondary institutions. The action-packed program kicks off on Thursday, January 23, at the Dordoni Campus, where approximately 450 middle and high school students will compete in a cross-country race from 9:45 AM to 12:30 PM.
February will see the spotlight shift to volleyball, with tournaments for both boys and girls in the Cadet category (grades 2 and 3 of middle school). Due to overwhelming participation, the event has been divided into three groups: Val d’Arda, Val Tidone, and the city area. March will bring 3×3 basketball for high school students in their first three years, alongside football competitions ranging from Cadet to Junior levels (grades 4 and 5 of high school) and badminton. While specific dates are still being finalized, April will feature table tennis, flag rugby (a non-contact sport where players aim to snatch flags from opponents), and track athletics on the 15th, 16th, 29th, and 30th. The first week of May will host regional competitions in Cesenatico, followed by provincial finals in the latter half of the month.
Mayor Katia Tarasconi concluded the event with a brief address, joined by key figures such as Sports Councilor Mario Dadati, Andrea Grossi (Director of the Territorial School Office for Parma and Piacenza), and Fiorenzo Zani (Head of UST Physical Education services). Also present were Robert Gionelli, CONI’s Provincial Delegate, and representatives from various organizations, including Alessandro Arata from the Federation of Sports Doctors, school principals Elisabetta ghiretti (Respighi High School) and Monica Ferri (Colombini High School), Elisabetta Dordoni from Sport and Health, Cesare Lucca of Fipav, CONI Technical Coordinator Pietro Peveri, and Paolo Michelotti from the Rowing Federation.
Engaging Interview with Sports Coach Marco Rossi on the Annual School Sports Competition
Moderator: Good morning, everyone! Today, we’re joined by Marco Rossi, a retired volleyball coach with over 20 years of experience in youth sports development. Marco has been instrumental in shaping young athletes in our region, and he’s here to share his insights on the Municipality’s upcoming annual school sports competition. Marco, welcome!
Marco Rossi: Thank you! It’s a pleasure to be here.
Moderator: Marco, let’s dive right in. The Municipality has just unveiled the schedule for this year’s school sports competitions, with the theme “Sport in Schools: A Platform for Instilling Values.” What are your thoughts on this message?
Marco Rossi: I think it’s a fantastic message. Sports aren’t just about competition; they’re about building character, teamwork, and discipline. Schools are the perfect environment to instill these values in young people. I’m notably impressed by the variety of sports included—cross-country, volleyball, basketball, football, and even flag rugby. It’s great to see so many opportunities for students to find a sport they love.
Moderator: speaking of opportunities, the cross-country race kicks off the event on January 23 at the Dordoni Campus. With 450 middle and high school students participating, it’s shaping up to be a massive event. Do you think events like this help foster a sense of community?
Marco Rossi: Absolutely. Events like this bring students, families, and educators together. It’s not just about the competition; it’s about celebrating effort and participation. Cross-country, in particular, is a great way to promote fitness and endurance. It’s also a sport where everyone can participate, irrespective of skill level, which makes it inclusive.
Moderator: Moving to February, the focus shifts to volleyball tournaments for the Cadet category. As a volleyball coach, what’s your take on dividing the event into three groups—Val d’Arda, Val Tidone, and the city area?
Marco Rossi: I think it’s a smart move. With so many schools participating, dividing the tournament into groups ensures that matches are more manageable and competitive. It also gives more students the chance to play and showcase their skills. My only concern is ensuring that all groups have equal access to facilities and resources. But it’s a well-organized plan.
Moderator: In March,we see 3×3 basketball and football competitions. 3×3 basketball has gained popularity in recent years. Do you think it’s a good fit for high school students?
Marco Rossi: Definately. 3×3 basketball is fast-paced and requires speedy thinking, which makes it exciting for both players and spectators. It’s also a great way to introduce basketball to students who might not be ready for the full 5×5 game. Plus, it’s easier to organise since fewer players are needed.
Moderator: April features table tennis, flag rugby, and track athletics. flag rugby,in particular,is a non-contact sport that’s gaining traction. What’s your opinion on introducing such sports in school competitions?
Marco Rossi: I’m all for it. flag rugby is a great option for students who might be hesitant about contact sports. It’s inclusive and focuses on strategy and teamwork, which are valuable skills. It’s also a fantastic way to introduce rugby to a broader audience. And let’s not forget table tennis and track athletics—both are excellent for developing hand-eye coordination and physical endurance.
Moderator: The competitions culminate in may with regional and provincial finals. What advice would you give to students preparing for these events?
Marco rossi: My advice is simple: enjoy the experience.Competitions like this are about more than just winning—they’re about learning, growing, and making memories.Focus on giving your best effort, supporting your teammates, and having fun. And remember, sports are a lifelong journey, not just a one-time event.
