Shin Yu-bin Aims for Redemption at Singapore Smash After Doha Disappointment
South Korean table tennis star Shin Yu-bin is gearing up for a comeback at the upcoming Singapore Smash tournament, seeking to bounce back from a disappointing performance at the WTT Star contender Doha.
Shin,representing Korean air,made it to the quarterfinals of the singles event in doha,but was ultimately defeated by Japan’s Miyu Kihara in a decisive 3-0 match.
The Singapore Smash, scheduled for January 30th to February 9th, promises to be even more challenging. Top-ranked Chinese players Sun Yingsha, Wang Manyu, and Wang yidi, who were absent from the Doha tournament, will be competing, adding a new layer of intensity to the competition.
Undeterred, Shin is determined to prove herself on the international stage. She will be participating in the women’s singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events. In the doubles, she will team up with fellow Korean Air player Lee Eun-hye, while in mixed doubles, she will partner with Cho Dae-seong of Samsung Life Insurance, reuniting the duo that competed in Doha.
shin’s return to the national team after the Paris Olympics, where she and Jeon Ji-hee secured a bronze medal in women’s doubles, adds another layer of intrigue to her Singapore Smash campaign. Jeon,who had retired from Korean play after the Olympics,will also be competing in the singles event.
Joining Shin in the women’s singles are fellow Korean players Lee Eun-hye, Seo Hyo-won (Korea Racing Association), Joo Cheon-hee (Samsung Life Insurance), and Kim Na-young (POSCO International).
On the men’s side, the Korea Exchange duo of Lim Jong-hoon and Ahn Jae-hyun will be competing in doubles, while Lim Jong-hoon, ahn Jae-hyun, Cho Dae-sung, Jang Woo-jin (SeAH), Lee Sang-soo (Samsung Life Insurance), and Oh Jun-seong (mirae Asset Securities) will all be vying for success in the singles event.

Shin yu-bin, the Korean table tennis sensation who recently took bronze in women’s doubles at the Paris Olympics, is gearing up for a dominant return to the international stage. After a slightly disappointing quarter-final exit at the WTT star Contender Doha,Shin is aiming for redemption at the upcoming Singapore Smash. We caught up with the steadfast athlete to discuss her preparations, goals, and the exciting challenges lying ahead.
Welcome back, Yu-bin! The Singapore Smash promises to be a thrilling competition. What are your primary goals for this tournament?
Shin Yu-bin: Thank you for having me. Certainly, the Singapore Smash is shaping up to be incredibly exciting. My focus this time around is multifaceted.Primarily, I’m aiming to surpass my Doha performance and achieve a podium finish in the singles event. Sadly, I fell short in the quarterfinals there. Facing Japan’s Miyu Kihara in the quarters and losing 3-0 was a tough lesson. I’ve learned from it and am determined to respond with strength.
You’ll be competing in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Which event are you most looking forward to, and what are your expectations?
Shin Yu-bin: It’s always exciting to compete in all three disciplines. Each presents unique challenges and thrills. Though, there’s a special excitement surrounding the doubles events. I’m thrilled to partner again with Lee Eun-hye in women’s doubles.We’ve got good synergy, and we’re hoping for a strong performance. In mixed doubles, reuniting with Cho Dae-seong feels like a homecoming. We certainly know each other’s game well,and I believe we can make a run for the title.
Addressing the elephant in the room – the absence of top-ranked chinese players in Doha allowed for some breathing room. This time, Sun Yingsha, Wang Manyu, and Wang yidi will be back. How do you see their return impacting the tournament?
Shin yu-bin: The presence of these exceptional Chinese players undoubtedly raises the stakes and intensity of the competition. they are world-class athletes, and facing them is always a learning experience. While their return makes the tournament more challenging, it also fuels my determination to perform at my best.Facing the best is the only way to truly test your abilities and grow as a player. I welcome the challenge.
Let’s talk about the Paris Olympics. That bronze medal was a historic achievement. How did that experience shape you? And Jeon Ji-hee, your partner in doubles, had announced retirement after the Olympics. What’s it like to see her back in the singles event?
Shin Yu-bin: The Paris Olympics was a pivotal moment in my career, and earning the bronze medal with Jeon Ji-hee was truly exhilarating. it reinforced my belief in my capabilities and fuelled my desire for continued success. Ji-hee’s return to singles is fantastic. She’s an incredibly talented player, and it’s inspiring to see her back competing on the international stage. it adds another layer of intrigue to the Singapore Smash.
The South Korean team is certainly looking strong for the Singapore Smash. With such a talented roster, what are your predictions for the team’s performance?
Shin Yu-bin: We have a strong lineup across both men’s and women’s singles, doubles, and mixed doubles categories. Players like Lee Eun-hye, Seo Hyo-won, Joo Cheon-hee, Kim Na-young, Lim Jong-hoon, Ahn Jae-hyun, Jang Woo-jin, and Lee Sang-soo are all fiercely competitive and hungry for success.
