But there are also systemic issues.The Bears offensive line has struggled to give him consistent protection, and there have been questions about the play-calling. Though, changing coordinators mid-season can be disruptive, especially for a young quarterback still trying to find his footing. It comes down to whether the new direction provides the type of support and structure Caleb needs to thrive.
Moderator: Speaking of structure, the Bears are now looking for a new head coach after Matt Eberflus was dismissed. What qualities should they look for in Williams’ next head coach?
Kurt Warner: Finding the right head coach is crucial for Williams’ development. they need someone who understands how to develop young quarterbacks, someone who can provide both structure and encouragement.
Think about the coaches who have successfully nurtured young quarterbacks like myself, Andy Luck, or Patrick Mahomes. They focused on building confidence, creating a culture of learning, and tailoring the offensive system to the quarterback’s strengths. The Bears need a leader who can do the same for Caleb.
Moderator: You mentioned Mahomes. Patrick Mahomes’ is a great example of a young quarterback who exploded onto the scene. Do you see similarities between Mahomes and Williams?
Kurt Warner: There are certainly similarities in their talent and arm strength. Both have the ability to make throws that most quarterbacks can only dream of. But Mahomes had the blessing of playing under Andy Reid,one of the most offensive-minded coaches in the league. Reid tailored his system to Mahomes’ strengths and gave him the freedom to improvise and make plays.
Caleb needs a coach who can do the same for him. It’s important to remember that every quarterback is different.
Moderator: Let’s talk about the talent surrounding Williams. The Bears have invested heavily in offensive weapons. Do you think these pieces are enough to succeed?
Kurt Warner: The Bears have some talented offensive weapons,no doubt. DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, Rome Odunze – that’s a pretty solid receiving corps. D’Andre Swift is a dynamic running back.
But talent alone isn’t enough. the offensive line needs to improve, and the play-calling needs to be more creative and effective. Williams needs to have the trust and confidence to utilize these weapons to their full potential.
Moderator: So, what’s the prognosis for Caleb Williams? can he overcome these early struggles and become the franchise quarterback the Bears drafted him to be?
Kurt Warner: I believe in Caleb’s talent. He has all the tools to be accomplished. But the question is, will the Bears provide him with the necessary support and guidance? They need the right coaching staff, the right offensive scheme, and the right environment for him to thrive. If they can create that environment, I have no doubt that Caleb Williams can become a star in this league.
