The basketball world was buzzing last night as SIG Strasbourg secured their ticket to the 2025 Leaders Cup in the most dramatic fashion imaginable. To dissect this thrilling comeback, I’m joined today by Thierry Gadou, a former SIG strasbourg star who helped the team to victory in the 2017 Leaders Cup. Thierry, welcome!
TG: Thanks for having me. It was a nail-biter, wasn’t it? I was glued to the screen watching the Nanterre game, nerves jangling right to the final buzzer.
Moderator: It’s not often we see a team qualify for such a prestigious tournament based on the result of another game! Your thoughts on Strasbourg’s nail-biting journey back to the Leaders Cup?
TG: It’s testament to their resilience, you know? They had a tough season, up and down at times, but they never gave up. That first half of the season performance was crucial, each win counting towards this unbelievable moment.
Moderator:
Absolutely. And talk about a rollercoaster of emotions! Nancy’s loss and then Nanterre losing to Monaco…did you think Strasbourg actually had a chance when that Monaco game went down to the wire?
TG: Honestly? It was touch and go. Monaco is a tough team, wouldn’t be surprised if they went all the way this year. But something told me Strasbourg would get lucky.Everyone’s pulling for them, you know? They’re a club with history, with heart. This Leaders Cup berth means a lot to the city,to the fanbase.
Moderator: It’s hard to argue against that. knowing the club, what do you think are their chances in the Leaders Cup itself? Paris Basketball are the reigning champs, Monaco is a threat, LDLC ASVEL is always powerful…
TG: There’s no doubt whatsoever the competition is fierce.Paris and monaco are going to be incredibly tough, but Strasbourg can’t be underestimated. They’ve got the experience, they’ve got the desire. I expect them to give everyone a good run for their money.
Moderator: They certainly have a fighting spirit! And what about the new format this year? Having the top eight teams directly qualify adds an extra layer of intensity, doesn’t it?
TG: It does! Every game is going to be a battle, no room for error. This new format makes for even more exciting basketball, I think.
Moderator: I think your right. The draw for the Leaders Cup takes place on January 14th – who would you like to see Strasbourg matched up against in the quarterfinals, and who do you think will be their biggest challenge overall?
TG: Hmm, that’s tough. Seeing them play Cholet again would be engaging. As for their biggest opponent, I’d say Monaco. Head-to-head, that’s going to be a battle for the ages.
Moderator: Fans are already eagerly anticipating those matchups! Thierry, thanks for sharing your insights, it’s been a pleasure to have you on the show.
TG: My pleasure. Let’s go Strasbourg!
