Sport Connects: A Conversation About Heidelberg’s Annual Celebration of Athletics
Heidelberg’s annual sports celebration is back, and this year’s theme, “Sport Connects,” couldn’t be more fitting. To dive deeper into this critically important topic, I’m joined by Sarah Miller, a former Olympic volleyball player and now a passionate advocate for youth sports. Welcome,Sarah!
Sarah: Thanks for having me! I’m always excited to talk about the power of sports to bring people together.

From customary favorites to more unconventional activities like ninja courses, there seems to be something for everyone. Do you think this wide range of options is essential for encouraging participation?
Sarah: Absolutely. It’s crucial to offer a variety of activities to cater to diffrent interests and abilities. Not everyone is drawn to team sports like volleyball. Some might prefer individual pursuits like climbing or even dance fitness, and events like this provide a platform for them to explore and discover new passions.
Moderator: The event also emphasizes inclusivity, featuring para-judo, wheelchair basketball, and adaptive fencing. This is something I strongly believe in as well. How important is it for sporting events to be accessible to everyone, irrespective of physical ability?
Sarah: Inclusivity should be at the heart of every sporting event. it’s about creating a welcoming habitat were anyone feels empowered to participate and experience the joy of movement and competition. Seeing athletes with disabilities compete alongside their able-bodied peers sends a powerful message of acceptance and equality.
