Caroní Celebrates Sports Mass with Athletes and Community
On January 6th, the annual Sports Mass was celebrated in San Félix, bringing together hundreds of Guyanese athletes and local officials. The event, held at the Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception Church, served as a platform to recognize athletic achievements and reaffirm the municipalityS commitment to sports progress.
Mayor Tito Oviedo, accompanied by Mayurvis Alcalá, president of the Municipal Chamber of Caroní, and other government representatives, participated in the Eucharist led by Father Frank Márquez.Following the religious ceremony,a vibrant display of sports demonstrations took place on the boardwalk,showcasing disciplines like karate do,judo,soccer,volleyball,and boxing.
In a speech, Mayor Oviedo emphasized the importance of continued investment in sports infrastructure and programs. He highlighted the municipality’s dedication to creating ”spaces for life, for good living, for family, and for sport,” aiming to provide athletes with the best possible environment to thrive.
The celebration also included the recognition of over 50 athletes and their coaches, honoring medalists from national and paranational youth games. Notably, Mayor Oviedo announced the launch of the “Manuel Piar” Scholarship, a program designed to support high-achieving student-athletes pursuing university studies. This initiative, aimed at providing socioeconomic assistance, reflects the municipality’s commitment to nurturing future Olympic hopefuls.
Looking ahead, Mayor Oviedo encouraged athletes to prepare for the upcoming thirty-third edition of the Paso A Nado of the Orinoco and Caroní rivers, a major sporting event organized by the municipality scheduled for April. This event, known for its challenging open-water swim, promises to be another highlight in Caroní’s vibrant sporting calendar.
