Cardinal Seek First ACC Road Win Against High-Scoring Panthers
Stanford (9-4, 1-1) will look to bounce back from a recent loss and secure their first Atlantic Coast Conference road victory against a formidable Pitt squad (11-2, 2-0) on Saturday. The Cardinal, coming off an 85-71 setback against Clemson on Wednesday, are eager to prove themselves in their inaugural season in the reconfigured ACC.
Despite the recent loss, Stanford boasts a potent offensive duo in 7-foot-1 center Maxime Raynaud and Duke transfer Jaylen Blakes. Raynaud, the Pac-12’s Moast Improved Player last season, has continued his impressive trajectory, averaging 20.8 points per game and recording 11 double-doubles this season. Blakes, simultaneously occurring, is enjoying a breakout year, contributing 15.2 points per game.
However, Stanford faces a daunting challenge in Pitt, a team currently receiving votes in the AP poll and riding a four-game winning streak. The Panthers have been dominant during this stretch, outscoring opponents by a combined 89 points. Their most recent victory, an 86-74 triumph over Cal, showcased their offensive firepower, with guard Jaland Lowe leading the charge with 27 points. Lowe’s exceptional playmaking abilities have earned him a spot among the nation’s top assist leaders, currently tied for 17th with 6.2 assists per game.
Pitt’s head coach, Jeff Capel, praised Lowe’s talent, stating, “I think Jaland is as good a guard as there is in college basketball. With good players, you just want to put them in a position where they can make reads and make plays.”
The Panthers will be hoping for the return of leading scorer Ishmael Leggett, who missed the Cal game due to an ankle injury sustained in practice. Leggett’s status for the Stanford game remains uncertain. Pitt is also awaiting the return of standout guard Damian dunn, who dislocated his thumb in late November but is expected to rejoin the team later this month.
Despite the potential absences, Pitt’s offensive prowess is undeniable. They rank 32nd nationally in scoring, averaging 84.2 points per game while shooting an impressive 49 percent from the field. Stanford’s defense, allowing 71.1 points per game, will need to be at its best to contain the Panthers’ high-octane offense.
This matchup marks the first meeting between Stanford and Pitt since 2013, when the Panthers emerged victorious with an 88-67 win in New York.
Breaking Down the Cardinal-Panthers Clash: An Interview with Coach Steve Smith
Welcome back, sports fans, to another insightful episode of “Courtside Chats!” Today, we’ve got a real treat: a luminary from the coaching world, the incredibly experienced Coach Steve Smith, joining us to dissect the upcoming clash between Stanford and Pitt. Coach Smith, welcome to the show!
Coach Smith: It’s a pleasure to be here.
Me: Coach, Stanford enters this game with a 9-4 record, but they’re coming off a tough loss against Clemson. How do you see them bouncing back against a high-flying Pitt team?
Coach Smith: Stanford’s got a lot of heart, but they’ve got a real test ahead of them. Pitt is firing on all cylinders right now, averaging 84 points a game. Stanford’s defense will need to step up and disrupt Pitt’s rhythm, particularly Jaland Lowe. He’s a fantastic playmaker.
Me: Speaking of Lowe,he’s putting up video game-like numbers. 27 points against Cal, ranked 17th in the nation for assists – he’s a true force. How do you see Stanford containing him?
Coach Smith: You can’t completely shut down a talent like Jaland lowe. Stanford’s gonna need a collective effort. They’ll need physicality on defense, trying to force him into tough shots, and make sure they don’t let him get his teammates involved easily.
Me: Stanford boasts a powerful duo in Maxime Raynaud and Jaylen Blakes. Raynaud, coming off a standout season last year, continues to dominate, averaging 20.8 points. blakes is having a breakout year too. How critically important will their performance be to Stanford’s success?
Coach Smith: Absolutely crucial. Those two are the engine of Stanford’s offense. Raynaud’s size and skill down low are tough to handle for any team, and blakes’ scoring ability from the perimeter keeps defenses honest. Pitt will need to double-team Raynaud and force other players to step up offensively.
Me: Now, Pitt’s been dealing with some injuries lately. Ishmael Leggett and Damian Dunn are both sidelined. How do you think their potential absence will impact the game?
Coach Smith: It’s a big blow for Pitt,no doubt. Leggett is their primary scorer, and Dunn is a proven leader on the court. Their absence will create opportunities for other guys on Pitt’s roster to step up. It could be a chance for younger players to shine.
Me: Stanford’s making their debut year in the ACC. How do you think this conference clash, against a strong opponent like Pitt, will help them adjust to this new level of competition?
Coach Smith: It’s baptism by fire for Stanford. the ACC is a gauntlet, night in and night out. Facing a team like Pitt on the road is a true test of their mettle. This game will show them what it’s going to take to compete at this level.
Me: Coach, before we wrap up, any predictions for this exciting matchup?
Coach Smith: This is going to be a hard-fought battle. I expect Pitt’s offense to be firing, but Stanford won’t back down. I predict a close game, possibly going down to the wire.
Me: thank you for sharing your insights, Coach Smith. This matchup is certainly shaping up to be a must-watch!
