Austrian Judo Referees Gather for Annual Training and Recognition
The annual state judges’ course for Austrian judo referees took place in maria Lankowitz on February 10th and 11th, 2025.This longstanding tradition, now in its 30th year, is a joint effort between the regional associations of Carinthia and Burgenland.
The first day of the course focused on reviewing the past yearS developments in judo officiating. Experienced referee speakers Manfred Hausberger and Hannes Müller provided insights into key trends and challenges. Roland Poiger, an IJF-A referee, presented the newly implemented IJF rules, effective since January 1st, 2025. These updates include the reintroduction of the Yuko scoring system and adjustments to the scoring for Waza-Ari and Ippon.
Day two delved into the practical submission of these new rules. Through interactive sessions and video analysis of 15 key scenarios, participants gained a extensive understanding of the rule changes. This hands-on approach allowed referees to practice their interpretation and application of the updated regulations on the mat.
Aspiring referees also participated in the course, with four candidates (three from Carinthia and one from Styria) successfully completing the theoretical examination. These individuals will now undergo a practical test at upcoming championships to earn their official licenses. Currently, the regional association boasts 13 licensed referees representing nine different clubs.
The judges’ course culminated in a special evening dedicated to honoring long-standing and deserving colleagues. The Austrian Judo Association (ÖJV) presented awards to several individuals for their outstanding contributions to judo officiating.Gold Medals of Honour were bestowed upon Fritz Steiner, Gerhard Reiterer, Petra Jungwirth, and Roland Pomberger, recognizing their extraordinary service and dedication.
