Badminton Stars Converge on Regensburg for South German championships
The Oberpfalz region is gearing up for a thrilling badminton spectacle as the SV Fortuna Regensburg hosts the prestigious South German Championships for the tenth time. This weekend, the best players from Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, and Saxony will battle it out for the coveted title and a chance to qualify for the German Championships in Cloppenburg in early February.
The competition promises to be fierce, with a record-breaking number of participants. Over 200 athletes will descend upon the historic Sporthalle Nord on the Isarstraße, showcasing the highest level of badminton talent in the region. The overwhelming response led organizers, in collaboration with the Saxon and bavarian sports directors Maik Hänig and Dieter Sichert, to adjust the traditional match schedule to accommodate the influx of competitors.
The action kicks off on Saturday with the mixed doubles, culminating in the finals later that day. The men’s and women’s singles will also commence, with preliminary rounds leading up to the round of 16. The day’s program is expected to run until 8 pm. Sunday will see the quarterfinals of the singles matches, followed by the semifinals and finals. The tournament will conclude with the women’s and men’s doubles finals.
Several top-ranked players are expected to dominate the competition. The SG Schorndorf, a powerhouse in the first Bundesliga, boasts strong contenders in David Kramer and Alain Erben. Bavarian second division teams TSV Neuhausen (Justin Seibel, Tobias Wadenka), TSV Freystadt (Ella Neve, Katarina Rudert, Moritz Miller), and TSV Marktheidenfeld (Steffen Grün, fabian Hippold, Janina Schumacher) are also fielding formidable athletes. Lena Reder from the second division BC Offenburg is another name to watch in the women’s singles category.
Despite the impressive field, only three players from Regensburg managed to secure a spot in the tournament. Valerian Eckert will make his debut for SV Fortuna Regensburg in the men’s singles and mixed doubles, partnering with his former teammate Edeltraud Vonmetz from SG PostSüd Regensburg. Lukas Weigert, a rising star from Fortuna, earned his place through consistent participation in ranking tournaments. He will compete in both singles and doubles alongside Luca Nerovcic from Neuhausen.
