This surgery, as Riner revealed in a December 2024 interview with Figaro, was long overdue. For seven years, he had been battling persistent elbow pain, requiring constant adjustments and physiotherapy to manage the injury.
“I’ve been dealing with this elbow issue for years,” Riner explained. “It kept dislocating,and despite the efforts of physiotherapists and osteologists,the pain became unbearable. It was time to address the problem head-on.”
This decision unluckily meant forfeiting his participation in the Paris Grand Slam scheduled for February 2025. Riner acknowledged the disappointment but emphasized the importance of prioritizing his long-term health, particularly with the Los Angeles Olympics on the horizon.
“I had hoped to compete in Paris,” he admitted, “but my medical team advised against it. I need to focus on fully recovering from this surgery to ensure I can compete at my best in los Angeles.”

Welcome, Teddy! Thanks for taking the time to speak with us today. Your career has been nothing short of impressive. Winning three gold medals and two bronze in the +100kg category at the olympics and adding two more gold medals in the mixed team event is truly remarkable. What keeps you motivated after all these years at the top?
“It’s straight forward, really. I love judo. It’s more than just a sport for me; it’s a way of life. The discipline, the dedication, the constant pursuit of advancement – these are things that I find incredibly rewarding.”
It’s significant to acknowledge the recent news of your elbow surgery.We know these types of decisions are never easy for athletes at your level. Can you walk us thru what led to this surgery?
“As most know,I’ve been battling this elbow issue for years. it kept popping out, despite the constant work of physiotherapists and osteologists. The pain became unbearable.After discussions with my medical team, we all agreed that surgery was the best option for long-term health and allowing me to compete at the highest level.”
It’s admirable to see your commitment to prioritizing your health. The decision to withdraw from the Paris Grand Slam must have been tough, considering it was on home soil. How did you make that call?
“It was extremely arduous. Competing in Paris was a dream, but my team and I know this isn’t a temporary setback but an possibility to come back stronger. The Los Angeles Olympics are on the horizon, and I need to ensure I’m 100% ready to give it my all there.”
quite a few analysts have debated whether this surgery might have a long-term impact on your performance. How do you respond to those concerns?
“I understand those concerns, and quite frankly, I share some of them. this is a significant surgery, but I’ve been diligently following my rehab program. My team and I are confident that I’ll return stronger and even more resilient. I’ve overcome challenges before, and I’m determined to prove that this is just another hurdle to overcome.”
You’ve demonstrated extraordinary mental fortitude throughout your career, Teddy. What message do you have for young athletes who face their own setbacks and are perhaps doubting their ability to return to their best?
“Never give up on your dream. You will face challenges, there’s there’s no doubt whatsoever about that. But it’s how you respond to those challenges that defines you. Surround yourself with a strong support system, trust the process, and never lose sight of why you started. With hard work and dedication, anything is possible.”
A powerful message. The judo community is certainly behind you, Teddy.What can your fans expect to see from you in the months leading up to the Los Angeles Olympics?
“I’m focused on my recovery, of course. but I’m also excited about getting back on the mat and competing again.The Olympics are the pinnacle of our sport, and I’m determined to give it everything I’ve got.”
