A Legacy on the Court: Cruz Hewitt Follows in His Father’s Footsteps at the Australian Open
The 2025 Australian Open qualifying rounds are underway, with Tuesday’s second rotation featuring a familiar name: Hewitt. While not the legendary Lleyton, this Hewitt is his son, Cruz, a rising star making his Grand Slam debut at the tender age of 16.
Invited to the tournament, Cruz brings limited professional experience, having participated in onyl around ten tournaments. Despite this, he has already tasted victory, securing wins in both 15,000 and 25,000 level events. Facing the formidable Georgian nikoloz Basilashvili, ranked 210th in the world, Cruz will undoubtedly face a steep challenge. However, the home crowd’s support could propel him to achieve an upset.
the parallels between Cruz’s journey and his father’s are striking. In 1997, a 15-year-old Lleyton Hewitt also received an invitation to the Australian Open qualifying rounds. He battled his way to the main draw before falling to Sergi Bruguera, then ranked 64th in the world. lleyton’s early Grand slam experience foreshadowed a remarkable career, culminating in two Grand Slam titles: the 2001 US Open and the 2002 Wimbledon Championship.
Cruz, now a few years older than his father was at his debut, aims to carve his own path in the tennis world. While emulating his father’s success is a lofty goal, Cruz’s determination and the support of his home crowd could pave the way for a memorable Australian open debut.
Following in Footsteps: A Conversation with Renowned Coach Tony Roche
Welcome back sports fans! Today, we’re thrilled to have legendary tennis coach Tony Roche joining us. With a career spanning decades – including coaching the likes of Lleyton Hewitt and Roger Federer – Tony brings a wealth of experience and insight to the court.
We’re diving into the exciting world of young Cruz Hewitt, son of australian tennis icon Lleyton Hewitt. cruz is making his Grand Slam debut at the 2025 Australian Open, echoing his father’s journey almost 30 years ago.
Tony, what are your initial thoughts on Cruz’s debut?
Tony Roche: It’s always exciting to see young talent emerging on the scene, especially when there’s a legacy attached.Cruz has big shoes to fill, following in his father’s footsteps, but he’s shown real promise in lower-level tournaments. The Australian Open will be a test of his mettle, but the support of the home crowd could be a huge advantage.
There’s undeniably a lot of pressure on Cruz given his family name. Do you think that’s a burden, or could it be a source of motivation?
TR: It’s a double-edged sword. The pressure is certainly there, but Cruz has probably grown up with that expectation. The key is to manage it, to channel that pressure into positive energy. Lleyton himself thrived under pressure,so perhaps that competitive fire will be passed down.
Cruz faces a tough opponent in nikoloz Basilashvili. Do you see Cruz pulling off an upset, or is that a step too far at this stage?
TR: Basilashvili is a solid player with a lot of experience. This will undoubtedly be a challenging match for Cruz. Though, anything can happen on the court. If Cruz can find his rhythm, play confidently, and capitalize on Basilashvili’s weaker shots, an upset isn’t unfeasible.
Let’s talk about the parallels between Cruz’s journey and Lleyton’s. Lleyton also made his Australian Open qualifying debut at 15. Do you see any similarities in their playing styles or personalities?
TR: There are some similarities, yes. Both have a natural fighting spirit, a real determination to win. Lleyton was known for his aggressive baseline game, and I see glimpses of that in Cruz’s style as well. It’ll be interesting to see how Cruz’s game develops in the coming years.
what advice would you give to Cruz as he navigates this major tournament and embarks on his professional career?
TR: My advice would be simple: Stay true to yourself, trust your abilities, and enjoy the process. It’s a long journey, with ups and downs. The key is to learn from every experience, both good and bad, and keep that passion for the game alive.
Thank you for your time and insights, Tony!
