A Festive Finale: ES Ormes tennis Club Hosts Thriving Christmas Tournament
The ES Ormes tennis club’s annual Christmas tournament concluded with a resounding success, drawing a remarkable 137 participants (52 women and 85 men) and boasting a waiting list of eager players. The finals, held with a celebratory atmosphere, showcased the club’s vibrant community spirit.
Young ball retrievers from the club’s tennis school and designated referees added a touch of professionalism to the event. While the anticipation was palpable, the matches themselves proved to be decisive.
In the women’s final, a clash between two Marine’s, Chapelloise Blevenec (ranked 15/1) and Dyonisienne Duchesne, saw Blevenec emerge victorious with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 win. “This was arguably my best performance in a long time, so I’m incredibly pleased,” Blevenec remarked after the match.
Blevenec, a tennis instructor at La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin, dominated the court with powerful volleys. “I managed to get a lot of height on my volleys, which seemed to disrupt her game. I scored many points that way,” she analyzed.
Duchesne, who had faced Blevenec in the quarterfinals the previous year (with Blevenec winning in three sets), acknowledged the challenge. “It was physically demanding. I had been competing in the Saint-Denis-en-Val tournament concurrently, which took its toll. I made too many errors and missed opportunities,” she admitted.
The men’s final was a more closely contested affair, with local favorite Julien Penet (15/1) pushing Saranais Cédric Larue (15/1) to the brink in the first set. Penet, however, faltered at a crucial juncture. “At 5-5, I had a disastrous service game,” he confessed, citing four double faults that cost him the set 5-7.”The pressure mounted, and I couldn’t regain my composure.”
Larue, a seasoned competitor, capitalized on Penet’s struggles, cruising through the second set to secure the championship. “I was initially nervous due to the large crowd in Ormes,” Larue admitted. “But I managed to focus and stay in my zone.”
Larue’s consistent play and strategic approach, characterized by a rhythmic style and deep shots, forced Penet into errors.
The tournament concluded with a convivial gathering, where the club paid tribute to Nicole Alazard, a dedicated volunteer who sadly passed away on December 27th at the age of 75. Her contributions to the club will be deeply missed.
Backhand Battles and Festive Fever: A Chat about ES Ormes’ Thriving Christmas Tournament
Welcome back, sports fans! This week, I’m thrilled to be joined by former professional tennis player and esteemed coach, Jean-Pierre DuBois, to discuss the ES Ormes tennis club’s recent Christmas tournament.
Jean-Pierre, welcome to the show!
dubois: It’s a pleasure to be here. Always delighted to chat about the splendid world of tennis.
Let’s dive right in. This tournament saw an extraordinary turnout, doesn’t it?
DuBois: Absolutely! 137 participants is fantastic, clearly showcasing the vibrant tennis community ES Ormes has cultivated.
And the waiting list just proves the tournament’s popularity. It’s a testament to the club’s commitment to creating a welcoming and competitive environment for players of all levels.
The women’s final was a dominant performance by Chapelloise Blevenec. What were yoru thoughts on her strategy, especially her emphasis on powerful volleys?
DuBois: Blevenec played exceptionally well. Her volleys were indeed a key factor, dictating the pace and forcing Duchesne on the defensive. It was a smart and effective tactic. It’s clear she was in top form.
Interesting. We also saw a tight contest in the men’s final. Julien Penet seemed to have a good chance early on, but ultimately fell to Cédric Larue. What do you attribute the turning point to?
DuBois: The first set was a nail-biter, with Penet holding his own against the seasoned Larue. Though, that service game at 5-5 proved crucial. those double faults were costly, and it seemed to shake penet’s confidence. Larue, on the other hand, remained composed and capitalized on the opening.Experience often plays a significant role in these moments.
Absolutely. Mentality can be just as crucial as physical prowess in tennis.
DuBois: Precisely!
Now, Jean-Pierre, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the growing popularity of recreational tennis tournaments like this one.
dubois: It’s fantastic to see! These tournaments provide a wonderful platform for players of all ages and skill levels to come together, enjoy the sport, and experience the thrill of competition in a supportive environment. They’re vital for nurturing the love of tennis and fostering a strong sense of community.
