A Rising Badminton Star: Almería’s Cristina Teruel Sets Sights on Olympic Glory
Almería’s Cristina Teruel, a rising star in the world of badminton, met with Antonio Casimiro, the Councillor for Active City, Mobility, and Sports, to discuss her journey and aspirations. Teruel, who began her badminton career at the tender age of six with the Mercapinturas club under the guidance of coach Fernando Carrillo, has already achieved remarkable success.
Her dedication and talent led her to the prestigious Badminton Center of Huelva at just 13 years old, following in the footsteps of Olympic champion Carolina Marín. Now, at 19, Teruel is a force to be reckoned with, holding the titles of Spanish under-23 Individual Champion and Spanish National Team Champion. She has also previously claimed the Spanish Individual Championship title.
Balancing rigorous training with her studies to become a primary school teacher, Teruel dedicates herself fully to her sport. Her daily routine consists of two hours of morning training and three and a half hours in the afternoon, from Monday to Saturday, with most weekends dedicated to competitions.
Teruel’s remarkable skills and international results have attracted attention from beyond spain. A French team has reached out, inviting her to compete in the French League, while she currently plays alongside teammates from Huelva in Spain.
The young athlete’s passion for badminton is evident. She highlights the positive atmosphere and camaraderie within the sport, as well as the constant challenge it presents, pushing her to improve every day.Her ultimate goal is to represent Spain at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. If that dream doesn’t materialize, she remains determined to compete in the following olympic Games.

Welcome back, sports enthusiasts! Today we have a fiery talent joining us, Cristina Teruel, Almería’s very own badminton prodigy. Cristina, at just 19, is already making waves in teh badminton world, and she’s here to chat about her journey, dreams, and the dedication it takes to chase Olympic glory.
Cristina, your story is truly inspiring. Starting at six years old with Mercapinturas club, you’ve climbed the ranks with remarkable speed, even training at the prestigious Badminton Center of Huelva like Olympic champion Carolina Marín. What was it like following in her footsteps?
Cristina: It was both inspiring and daunting. Carolina is a legend, and training in the same place she honed her skills was incredibly motivating. Of course, there was pressure to live up to the legacy, but I channeled it into my training, focusing on improving every day.
You’ve achieved so much already – Spanish under-23 Individual Champion, Spanish national Team Champion, and even the Spanish Individual Championship title. What drives you to keep pushing for more?
Cristina: Badminton isn’t just a sport for me, it’s a passion.The constant challenge, the thrill of competition, and the amazing camaraderie within the sport – it all fuels my drive. Every victory is a testament to the hard work, but there’s always room for enhancement, wich keeps me going.
now, balancing your rigorous training schedule with your studies to become a primary school teacher is no easy feat.how do you manage it all?
Cristina: It’s definitely a juggling act! Two hours of morning training, three and a half hours in the afternoon, plus competitions most weekends – it can be exhausting. But I’m fortunate to have a supportive family and coaching staff. They help me stay organized and motivated.
The French League has come knocking – a fantastic prospect for any athlete. Is playing abroad something you’re considering?
Cristina: It’s certainly tempting! Playing alongside top international talent would be an unbelievable learning experience. Right now, my focus is on representing Spain, but exploring opportunities abroad is something I’ll definitely consider in the future.
We can’t ignore your ultimate goal – the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. What does it mean to you to dream so big, and what are you doing to prepare for that moment?
Cristina: Representing Spain at the Olympics would be the pinnacle of my career. It’s a dream I’ve nurtured since I was a child. Every training session,every competition,every drop of sweat is a step towards that goal. I’m working relentlessly with my coaches, fine-tuning my skills, and gaining valuable international experience.
