Nîmes Gears Up for Record-Breaking Archery Tournament
The Occitanie Nîmes archery tournament is set to return this weekend, marking its 27th edition and boasting a record-breaking 1,240 participants. This prestigious event, serving as the fourth stage of the Indoor World Series, will see archers from around the globe compete in the heart of Nîmes.
Adding to the excitement, local heroes Baptiste Addis and Jean-Charles Valladont, both silver medalists at the paris Olympics, will be gracing the tournament with thier presence.
The tournament follows previous legs in Lausanne, Luxembourg, and taipei, with Chicago and Las Vegas rounding out the series. The top sixteen male and female archers in both the recurve (Olympic discipline) and compound categories will qualify for the grand finale in las Vegas on March 8th, vying for the ultimate prize.
Aiming for European Dominance
Currently ranked 11th and 23rd in the world respectively, Addis and Valladont will be looking to capitalize on home advantage to solidify their positions in the international rankings. While Addis may potentially miss the Chicago leg to participate in a training camp in South Korea, a renowned archery powerhouse, the focus remains on securing a strong performance in Nîmes.Olivier Grillat, the sporting director of their club, AC Nîmes, emphasizes the importance of this tournament: “The goal is to consolidate their position and establish European dominance.”
France currently holds the European team title, having secured a silver medal at the Olympics after a close encounter with South Korea.
A Platform for Emerging Talent
Addis, a rising star at just 18 years old, has already demonstrated his prowess at home, finishing as a finalist in Nîmes in 2023 and achieving an impressive 8th place finish in 2024. His teammate, Valladont, a seasoned archer at 35, has tasted victory in Nîmes twice before, in 2017 and 2009.Last year’s tournament saw young talents Dror from Israel and Canales from Spain emerge victorious. With the South Korean team absent this year due to a national training camp, the stage is set for European archers to shine.
