A Czech Goalkeeping Legend Returns Home: Tomáš Koubek joins Liberec

Koubek’s arrival is a significant boost for Liberec, who secured his services as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with German club Augsburg.
“Tomáš is a seasoned player with extensive experience both abroad and with the national team,” stated Liberec CEO Jan Nezmar. “He has been diligently training individually for the past six months, so it will naturally take some time for him to regain his peak form.” Nezmar emphasized Koubek’s unwavering motivation and desire to compete, qualities that have always defined him as a leader both on and off the field.Koubek’s journey began in Liberec,where he played a pivotal role in the team’s notable third-place finish and subsequent qualification for the Europa League group stage during the 2015/16 season.His performances caught the eye of Sparta Prague, who subsequently acquired him from Hradec Králové.
From there, Koubek’s career soared. He enjoyed a successful stint with French club Rennes before moving to Augsburg in the summer of 2019. During his time in the Bundesliga, Koubek made 38 appearances, demonstrating his ability to compete at the highest level.
While Koubek expressed a desire to remain in Augsburg due to family ties, the club opted to move in a different direction. However, his time in germany proved financially rewarding, with his salary nearly doubling compared to his previous stint in France. According to Capology, Koubek earned an estimated 165 million Czech crowns throughout his career.Beyond club football, Koubek also represented the Czech Republic national team with distinction, earning 12 caps between 2016 and 2022.His domestic league experience is equally impressive, boasting 113 appearances and 37 clean sheets.
Koubek is expected to assume the role of Liberec’s first-choice goalkeeper, with current custodian Jan Bačkovský likely providing backup. Viktor Kolář,Koubek’s agent from sport Invest,confirmed the goalkeeper’s eagerness to return to action. “Tomáš retains a strong passion for football,” Kolář stated. “He maintained a rigorous training regimen throughout the autumn in Augsburg,preparing himself for the winter transfer window.”
With Koubek’s arrival, Liberec has undoubtedly strengthened their squad and signaled their ambition for the remainder of the season.

Moderator: You’ve made a name for yourself on both the domestic and international stage. What are your thoughts on the state of Czech football right now, compared to when you first started out?
Tomáš: I think Czech football is in a good place. We have a lot of talented young players coming through the ranks, and the national team is showing real promise. What I would like to see is a stronger emphasis on developing homegrown talent, giving young players the opportunities they need to blossom.
Moderator: There’s been some debate about whether your return to Liberec is more about sentimentality or a genuine desire to win trophies. Where do you stand on this?
Tomáš: I understand the sentiment. Of course, there’s a strong emotional connection for me here. But make no mistake, I’m back to win.I wouldn’t have returned if I didn’t believe in this team and our ability to achieve great things.
Moderator: You’re coming in as a seasoned veteran, but what are your thoughts on working with younger players like Jan Bačkovský, who’s been Liberec’s main goalkeeper?
