Magic: It’s a complex situation, there’s no doubt whatsoever. I think everyone wants peace in that region. It’s heartbreaking to see the suffering. But erasing Hamas entirely? I’m not sure that’s realistic or even beneficial in the long run. We need to remember, there are innocent people caught in the crossfire, and simply eliminating a group might create more instability.It’s about finding solutions that address the root causes of the conflict, not just putting a bandage on a gaping wound.
Waltz believes that Israel has the right to fully defend itself against Hamas. Considering your experience with high-pressure situations, both on and off the court, how do you think that right balances with the need for responsible action and minimizing civilian casualties?
Magic: Listen, I’ve been in heated games were things get intense.but never has it been a matter of life and death. When it comes to a conflict like this, you can’t just talk about “winning.” There are human lives at stake. Israel has the right to defend itself, absolutely. But that defense can’t come at the cost of innocent lives. There needs to be a constant conversation, a willingness to compromise, and a focus on reaching a lasting peace, not just a temporary victory.
Waltz also emphasizes the importance of securing the release of American hostages before pursuing other goals. Do you think that’s a fair approach? Should hostage negotiation take precedence over other diplomatic efforts?
Magic: Every human life is precious. It’s a no-brainer that bringing our citizens home should be a top priority. But you can’t compartmentalize these issues. While freeing hostages is crucial, it shouldn’t be used as leverage or a bargaining chip in larger geopolitical negotiations. The goal should be to create a sustainable peace where hostage-taking becomes a non-issue altogether.
do you believe that this strategy has the potential to achieve lasting peace in the Middle east?
Magic: Whether this particular strategy is the answer, time will tell. It’s certainly ambitious.But achieving lasting peace in the Middle East requires a multi-pronged approach, one that addresses the complex historical, political and economic factors driving the conflict. It’s not a quick fix. It takes visionary leadership,empathy,and a willingness to work together to find common ground.
