Tyrolean Judoka Excel at Prestigious New YearS Course
A group of keen judoka from across Tyrol embarked on a journey to Linz to participate in the renowned New Year’s judo course, held from January 2nd to 5th, 2025.Representing clubs like ATSV Jenbach/T, JC VKB Tirol, Zillertal JV, JK Fieberbrunn, JU raika East Tyrol, JZ Innsbruck, WSG Judo Wattens, and Tyrolean oberland, these athletes, accompanied by their dedicated coaches Stefan Karrer, Domenik Pircher, Leonhard Unterrainer, and Kathrin Told, kicked off the new year with an exceptional training experience.
Learning from a Judo Legend: Krisztian Toth
The highlight of the course was the opportunity to train under the guidance of krisztian Toth, a Hungarian judo icon. Toth, boasting an impressive resume including a vice World Championship title in 2014 and a Bronze medal at the 2021 Olympics, shared his vast knowlege and expertise with the participants.
the focus of the technical training centered around mastering the Seoi-Nage, a classic judo throwing technique. toth meticulously demonstrated the correct footwork, kuzushi (the preparatory phase for a throw), and body rotation, ensuring each judoka received personalized tips to refine their technique. He also showcased one of his signature ground fighting techniques, providing valuable insights into advanced grappling strategies.
Sparring and Team Spirit
Beyond technical refinement, the course emphasized practical request. Intense Tachi-Waza-Randori sessions, wich are simulated sparring matches, allowed the judoka to put their newly acquired skills to the test. These sessions not only honed their technical abilities but also fostered a strong sense of camaraderie and team spirit.
Gearing Up for Future Competitions
After four days of intensive training, the Tyrolean judoka returned home energized and well-prepared. The course served as a valuable platform for individual skill development and provided a solid foundation for upcoming competitions, including the Austrian Championships U18/U23, scheduled to be held in Schwaz.

Stefan Karrer: Toth’s expertise and passion for judo were contagious. He broke down the Seoi-Nage technique in meticulous detail, ensuring each judoka understood the nuances of footwork, kuzushi, and body mechanics. Many of our athletes saw significant enhancement in their execution of the throw by the end of the course.
