Whiskey, Websites, and Winning: A Conversation with Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps
Today, we’re diving into the world of online experiences with legendary Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps. Michael, welcome to the table. It’s an honor to have you.
Michael Phelps: Thanks for having me. Always happy to talk about… well, almost anything, really.
Moderator: We’re focusing today on something a little different: your online journey, specifically your experience as a consumer engaging with websites that use cookies. This whiskey company, such as, outlines their policy on cookies quite clearly, highlighting the use of essential, third-party, and iframe cookies to enhance the user experience. Does that raise any red flags for you?
Michael Phelps: To be honest, I wasn’t even aware of the intricacies of cookies before.Like most people, I just click “except” without giving it much thought.
Moderator: That’s understandable. But knowing that companies utilize cookies to track your activity, personalize content, and even address technical issues – does that change your outlook? Woudl you still be comfortable accepting these cookies?
Michael Phelps: It’s definitely interesting to learn more about how websites function behind the scenes. Personalization is something I appreciate, so knowing that cookies play a role in that is cool. But the tracking part makes me a little uneasy.
Moderator: Why is that?
Michael Phelps: It’s all about control, right? I train hard to be in control of my body, my performance, even my social media presence. The idea that my online movements are being tracked and analyzed doesn’t exactly align with that mindset.
Moderator: A lot of sports fans might agree with you. But the argument is often made that these tracking measures ultimately benefit the consumer by allowing companies to identify and resolve issues, leading to a smoother and more enjoyable experience. They also personalize content, potentially leading you to discover new whiskeys or products you might genuinely love.
michael Phelps: I see your point. I’m not saying I’m against cookies altogether. Perhaps a more transparent system where users can choose precisely wich types of cookies they accept would be ideal. That way, I could opt for personalization while minimizing the tracking aspect.
Moderator: That’s a great suggestion, Michael. It gets to the heart of user empowerment and control over their online experience.
What advice would you give to young athletes and fans navigating the complex world of online data?
Michael Phelps: be informed. Don’t just blindly click “accept.” Take a few minutes to read privacy policies and understand how your data is being used.
And remember, you always have the right to say no.
Moderator: Absolutely. Transparency and user choice are paramount. Thanks for sharing your insights,Michael.
Michael Phelps: My pleasure. Let’s get back to talking about swimming now!
