Havana– The Women’s Superior Basketball League is set to make a grand return on February 18, introducing a revamped structure that will see the nation’s top athletes grouped into four competitive teams.
Dalia Henry, the National Commissioner for basketball, shared with Radio Rebelde that the tournament will unfold in four distinct phases. These matches will take place at key venues across the country, including the Ramón Font Hall in Havana, the Rafael Fortún in Camagüey, the Giraldo Córdoba Cardín in Ciego de Ávila, and the Alejandro Urgellés in Santiago de Cuba.
“economic challenges have necessitated a shift in the league’s format,” Henry explained. “We’ve moved away from the conventional home-and-away club matches. Instead, teams are now organized by geographical regions to ensure a balanced and competitive environment.”
The Western squad will feature players from Pinar del Río, Artemisa, and Havana. The Central-west team will bring together talent from Matanzas, Mayabeque, Villa clara, and Las Avilenas.
Meanwhile, the Center team will consist of athletes from cienfuegos, Sancti Spíritus, Las tunas, and Camagüey. The Eastern team will showcase players from Guantánamo, Holguín, Granma, and Santiago de Cuba.
Henry, a former national team player, elaborated on the competition format. “Each team will participate in a round-robin phase, totaling approximately 24 matches. The championship will be decided through a playoff series, with the best-of-two format determining the winner. This structure ensures that young players gain ample experience to develop their skills.”
She also highlighted the preparations for the first phase, scheduled to begin at Havana’s Ramón Font Hall from February 18 to 25. “Teams are expected to arrive in the capital by the 16th,ensuring everything is in place for a successful start,” she added.
