“Publicize the benefits of transplantation”. With these words, the Councilor for Physical Activity and Sports José Ramón Tuero explained the main objective of the Gijón in the National Transplant Games”>National Transplant Games that will be held for the first time in history in Gijón. The event will take place from April 28 to May 2 and competitions of up to thirteen different sports will be offered. Thus, there will be paddle tennis, badminton, table tennis, swimming, darts, petanque, cycling, bowling, golf and even a virtual triathlon. In addition, integrated into the Gijón Half Marathon, there will be a 5 km race. under the slogan ‘Race for life, for donations and for public health’, devoid of competitive spirit. In addition, as the main novelty compared to the editions held in other cities so far, there will be football through the ‘Friendly Match for the Donation of Organs, Marbles and Tissues’.
It is still early to make estimates, but it is estimated that around 150 people will participate. “The response to sporting events in our city is usually very positive, and this time it will be no less”, predicts Tuero, who has worked intensively with the Spain Sports and Transplant Association. From this group, it is intended to promote organism and bone marrow donation and persuade society about all the positive effects, which undoubtedly save lives. In addition, this occasion has a special sensitivity since it is intended to pay tribute to whoever was the president of the organization, Vicente Granado, who passed away last November.
Involve society
Asturias continues to be, despite the pandemic, one of the regions with a donor rate above 50 per million inhabitants. For this reason, it is hoped that this awareness will be reflected in a good participation in an event that will be open to all ages: the category of the youngest for those who have reached the age of five and there will be a strip for those who are over eighty. The goal is to involve as many people as possible.
