The Monzón Basketball Club mourns the death of the young skier injured in Astún

The Monzón Basketball Club has expressed his pain by death of Pablo Sole Canales, the 19-year-old who died on Wednesday when he fell down a ravine while skiing off-piste at the Astún resort. Although he never officially played in the club’s jersey, he did the preseason with senior team in the fall of 2020 before returning to Moscow, where he lived and studied.

From the entity they have highlighted that the young man belongs to a family with a long tradition in the club (parents, uncles, grandfather …). “His father’s professional career – a director of the multinational Repsol – had taken him around the world and He was a continuation of the love for basketball from his family saga“, they remember.

Pablo Sole Canales participated in the summer campus and he also did the preseason with the senior team while waiting for permission to return with his mother to Moscow where he lived, studied and played. “For all this he was known and appreciated as one of the group, standing out for his commitment, passion and energy in each session”, they emphasize from the club. “We share as much as possible the pain of his family, of his parents Miguel and Alegría, and we will pray that the necessary strength will assist them to overcome a loss of such magnitude. Pablo, rest in peace“concludes the message they have posted on their social networks.

The tragic accident occurred around 12.00 noon in the area of Truchas. Apparently, the victim was skiing in the company of another young relative of his and he rushed down a ravine suffering a strong blow. The písters of the station immediately went to the place and they managed to get him out after a complicated maneuver. Specialists from the Civil Guard rescue groups also appeared, but they did not have to intervene in the rescue, they simply carried out Judicial Police tasks to investigate the causes of the accident.

The skier was initially evacuated to the Astún medical center, where, after assessing the severity of the injuries, they decided to require the 112 helicopter, which finally transferred him to the Miguel Servet Hospital in Zaragoza. There he passed away shortly after.

The event caused a deep commotion among the residents of Monzón since the family is well known in the capital of Cinca Medio. They lived in Moscow and were on vacation. The father works for the multinational Repsol, which led them to live in their day in Venezuela and then in Russia. The mother belongs to a family of industrial entrepreneurs from Monzón.

From the Astún station they expressed their condolences for the death of this skier. “It is a very big stick and especially when it comes to a young kid”they stated. Noted that fortunately off-track accidents are not very frequent “but sometimes they happen”, they also recalled.
