Warnings against espionage in China

Dhe German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) recommends that his team use cell phones specially made available for the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. The “My2022” app, which is compulsory for the organizers, should be installed on these and not on private telephones. In this, every participant arriving for the games starting on February 4th in the Chinese capital must enter medical data such as the result of their PCR tests for the coronavirus before departure and the result of a daily fever measurement.

The DOSB does not explain the recommendation that the British and Dutch have given their Olympic travelers. There is explicit reference to the danger of digital espionage by the Chinese regime. The British Olympic Association recommends that British Olympic participants not bring their personal phones to China.

Cell phones are then scrapped

The Nederlands Olympisch Comité * Nederlandse Sport Federatie has also instructed its athletes not to take private devices such as cell phones and laptops with them to China, as the newspaper “De Volkskrant” initially reported on Tuesday. The equipment that will be made available to the Dutch athletes is to be destroyed upon their return. The Dutch NOK explicitly referred to the danger of digital espionage by China’s security organs.

The German athletes, it is said, should be allowed to keep their equipment available for the games. Various journalist organizations and human rights organizations have also been pointing out the danger of digital and analog surveillance for months.

A spokesman for the International Olympic Committee refused to comment on the Dutch warning at a technical briefing for journalists on Wednesday. Christian Mihr, the managing director of Reporters Without Borders Germany, warned the hosts at the end of November “against surveillance and possible pressure” on journalists reporting on the games and recommended not to download any applications. Mihr had asked the DOSB to “publicly and clearly demand compliance with freedom of the press and human rights”.
