Australia cancels tennis player Novak Djokovic’s visa

BarcelonaAustralia has already made a decision on Novak Djokovic. Immigration Minister Alex Hawke has announced that he is canceling the Serbian tennis player‘s visa after a week of tug-of-war. Therefore, the Australian government is once again trying to deport Djokovic, who has won the Australian Open nine times. Should the government step down, the Serb could not take part in the first Grand Slam of the year. Hawke said in a statement that the decision was made in the light of “Australia’s health” and “the interests of the people”.

The Serbian tennis player entered the country on the 5th without having been vaccinated against covid. According to the Australian authorities, Djokovic had justified that, despite not being vaccinated, he had tested positive for covid-19 in December and therefore had a medical exemption to travel to Australia. Last week, Australia decided to detain Djokovic in a hotel while he was being extradited because the authorities did not validate the medical exemption he had requested. The tennis player appealed to the Australian judiciary, which, against all odds, ruled in his favor. However, while Djokovic was able to leave the hotel and begin training, the Ministry of Immigration continued to study the case. This Friday, three days before the start of the competition and with the draw drawn, Australia has decided to cancel the tennis player’s visa, who could now still appeal the decision to the Federal Circuit and Family Court of the country.

If the tennis player’s lawyers appealed the Australian government’s decision and justice turned its back on him, Djokovic would risk not being able to enter Australia for three years. The Serbian tennis player series in Australia could be extended for a few more days.
