Argentine tennis will have eight representatives in Australia after 11 years

Argentine tennis is going through a great present with the perseverance of Diego Schwartzman, who continues to be among the best 20 tennis players in the world, the resurgence of Federico Delbonis and Facundo Bagnis, who have had a great 2021 and irruptions of the youth players Juan Manuel Cérundolo, Tomás Etcheverry and Sebastian Baez.

With this premise, the 2022 season seems to be auspicious for national tennis players, since the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year, will have the presence of eight Argentine representatives in the main draw, a fact that did not happen 11 years ago.

The 2011 edition was the last time there were that many players in the main draw of the Australian contest. That year the country was represented by Juan Ignacio Chela, David Nalbandian, Juan Martín Del Potro, Eduardo Schwank, Leonardo Mayer, Brian Dabul, Juan Mónaco and Carlos Berlocq.

The walk of the eight tennis players was not the best in Melbourne, since none of them could overcome the second round, something remarkable due to the level that Nalbandian, Monaco and Chela had at that time.

The reality in the 2022 edition seems to have other nuances, since Schwartzman remains firm among the best 20 in the world, Delbonis, Coria and Bagnis found regularity last season that led them to rise in the ranking, while Báez and Cerúndolo have made a great irruption during this last year.

Regarding the draw for the eight national tennis players, The “Little” Schwartzman will face the Serbian Filip Krajinovic for the first time, Federico Coria will face the Frenchman Gael Monfils, Federico Delbonis will clash against the Spanish Pedro Martínez, Facundo Bagnis will do the same against the Chilean Cristian Garin, Sebastián Báez will debut in the tournament against the Spanish Albert Ramos Viñolas and Juan Manuel Cerúndolo will play with the Czech Tomas Machac,

For its part, the Argentinians coming from the qualy Marco Trungelliti and Tómas Etcheverry will face Frances Tiafoe and Pablo Carreño Busta, respectively.

The crossovers pose a challenge for the national representatives, as some rivals are seeded while others perform well on concrete.

The truth is that this edition of the Australian Open represents a good chance for tennis players born on Argentine soil to continue what was done last year, which has once again put Argentine tennis in the forefront of the ATP circuit.
