Melbourne – Concerns about US tennis legend Chris Evert (67).
The former world-class player is suffering from ovarian cancer. She announced this publicly on Twitter on Saturday.
“I want to share my story (…) to help others,” she wrote there. She is happy that it was recognized early and is expecting positive results from her chemotherapy, says the tennis icon.
She will now concentrate on her health and the upcoming treatment, according to Evert. However, she will occasionally report from home as part of the TV coverage for the Australia Open, she explained.
Evert led the world rankings for 260 weeks during her career and amassed 18 Grand Slam titles. As one of the first players, she played the backhand with both hands.
Her big opponent on the court was Martina Navratilova, who also won 18 Grand Slam titles.
Chris Evert was the first player to reach 1000 wins in professional women’s tennis. In 1995 she was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame
After her playing days, she assumed the presidency of the Womens Tennis Association (WTA).
