“We were shooting in the winter because that’s when the sky is most overcast,” Hardwicke recalls. “We couldn’t have bright sunshine because then the vampires would have to shine. We didn’t want them fizzing all the time, we couldn’t afford it. Sparkling CGI is very expensive.
Continuing, the Twilight director recalled how the constant showers of rain made her job even more difficult. “Time didn’t cooperate,” Hardwicke recalled. “And you can’t have pouring rain [because of] all the makeup drops the hair. They just don’t look like great vampires in the pouring rain.
Obviously, the pouring rain and scorching cold were less than ideal. However, the cold weather had a positive effect. It actually helped some of the Twilight cast members hook up pretty easily. In the aforementioned interview, Nikkie Reed (who played Rosalie Hale) recalled feeling particularly close to her castmates while filming the baseball scene.
“It was super cold and we became this little family very quickly,” Reed recalls. Hardwicke was quick to echo the actor’s sentiments. “It was a really good bonding experience for all vampires,” she said. The baseball scene may have been very difficult to film, but we’re sure Twilight fans appreciate the dedication the cast and crew put into making it memorable.
