Camerota, basketball and more. A family matter

BASKETBALL, THE HISTORY
Camerota, a surname that recalls a multifaceted figure: that of Elio, mayor of Minturno in 1974-76 and in 1983-88, insurer, entrepreneur in the tourism sector in Scauri, basketball player and then manager of the biancazzurra team, who died in 2004 in 71 years old. His children Cristiana, 56, an insurance agent and former player, and Davide, 51, a lawyer, operator of the Riviera di Minturno-Scauri Consortium and former athlete of the Pontine club remember his commitment to sport. «At home he remembers Cristiana – my father often spoke of his experience with Libertas, in the 1950s, of the trips with avid fans and of competitions fought on the pitch. I also remember his interlude as president of the company at the end of the 1980s. The bond with basketball then passed on to us children: all six of us practiced this beautiful discipline ».
GRAND DAUGHTER OF ART
“The competitive tradition continues in the family with my daughter, Martina Petraglia, saber of the Fiamme Gialle and the national team”. The speech slips on Elio’s travel companions, in his sporting adventure: “I think of Pino D’Alessandro (for a long time provincial president of the Coni di Latina), Mimmo Ianniello (a point of reference of the Scaurese movement) and Mario Dalla Chiara (lifelong friend) “. Cristiana Camerota then talks about her experience in the world of basketball: «I started, like many peers, with the minibasket at the Mallozzi Arena. In 1977-83 I was part of the women’s team, coached by Giovannino Falco. I shared that adventure with Paola Coletta, Giovanna Persechino, Rori Monti, Margherita and Antonella Dalla Chiara, Cetty Granata, Assunta Fedele and Donatella Nasta. I stopped playing early, when I started working ». A curious episode? «Coach Giovannino used to come to the Arena with a moped. At the end of the training, my teammates and I competed to get on his vehicle and get a pass. The Polisportiva (Arena Mallozzi, ed) was a nice place to gather and meet. Among the many friends, I remember two players, Tony Veglia and Massimo Irace ».
Davide recalls, however, an extraordinary match: «May 1985, San Severo-Scauri 60-64. That victory sanctioned the return of the dolphins in Serie B. My father (then mayor of Minturno) was carried in triumph by the Scauresi fans through the streets of the center of Puglia. For him, who had defended the blue and white colors in his youth, it was a really exciting moment ». «The fellow citizens adds Davide Camerota – they should support and participate in this invaluable movement, in terms of training, aggregation and tourism promotion. My father, first player and manager, then administrator and tour operator, has committed himself with passion and sacrifice to transmit this message and concretely gave his example, making his 6 children play basketball and especially sacrificing Sundays in the family to the cause. sporty”.
