1 round

The first Germans failed at the Australia Open. Peter Gojowczyk and Tatjana Maria both lost their matches in the first round. Andrea Petkovic followed later.

Tennis pro Peter Gojowczyk failed in the first round of the Australian Open. The 32-year-old from Munich lost 3: 6, 3: 6, 3: 6 to Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi in his first round match on Monday. Gojowczyk ultimately had no chance and had to face the world number 65 after a playing time of 1:36 hours. give up.

Gojowczyk had recently fought his way up to 87th place in the world rankings and had advanced to the round of 16 as a qualifier at the US Open last year – in Melbourne he was unable to build on his success.

Maria with good performance

For Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) and Andrea Petkovic (Darmstadt) the tournament is already over after the first day. Maria sold against the US Open semifinalist Maria Sakkari (Greece / No. 5) in the 4: 7, 6: 7 (2: 7) defeat but expensive.

The 34-year-old was in the main draw in Melbourne because of her protected ranking, although she is only 258th in the world rankings. She only returned to the tour in July 2021 after the birth of her second daughter and a break of almost a year.

Petkovic tensed up, Koepfer cheered

Andrea Petkovic, on the other hand, had to admit defeat. The Darmstadt native struggled with her game, repeatedly scolded and hit her racket angrily on the blue hard court: The former quarter-finalist from Melbourne had no chance at 2: 6, 0: 6 against the extremely solid French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova from the Czech Republic.

Petkovic had expressed great respect for the Krejcikova challenge, but looked forward to her 46th Grand Slam participation after “perfect preparation” with optimism. In the Kia Arena in Melbourne Park, however, little came together at the former world number ninth. Her first serve came too rarely, Petkovic made a lot of simple mistakes and cramped more and more.

Things went better for Dominik Koepfer. The 27-year-old from Furtwangen beat the Spaniard Carlos Taberner 6:1, 3:6, 6:4, 6:1 in the first round of the Grand Slam tournament after a concentrated performance over long stretches. The German number three now meets either Reilly Opelka (USA/No. 23) or Kevin Anderson (South Africa).

A total of eight German professionals are in action on the first day of the tournament, including Olympic champion Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) in a duel with compatriot Daniel Altmaier (Kempen) in the night session in the Rod Laver Arena (2nd match after 9:00 a.m. CET/Eurosport) . Three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber (Kiel) intervenes on Tuesday against Kaia Kanepi (Estonia).
