At the Australian Open, the Italian Matteo Berrettini qualifies in pain

AUSTRALIAN OPEN – Painful introduction for Matteo Berrettini in Melbourne. Winner of the American Brandon Nakashima in the first round of the Australian Open on Monday January 17 (4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7/5) 6-3), the Italian had some misadventures during the meeting.

Caught with stomach aches in the middle of the game, the world number 7, finalist of the last Wimbledon, indeed had to make a few round trips, three in total, to the toilet. Relieved after the match point, as you can see below, he then split a dedication for the less original, writing “Imodium! Thank you!” (“Imodium! Thank you!”) on camera, in reference to the famous anti-diarrheal drug.

“I really held on with my mental toughness especially, because my body wasn’t there,” he said afterwards. Matteo Berrettini will challenge another American in the second round since he will be opposed to Stefan Kozlov (169th in the world). Hoping he is fully recovered by then.
